How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team:

The Technologist, Hydrometrics is responsible for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of TRCA’s stream, precipitation, and meteorological networks, including the installation of environmental monitoring equipment and related data measurements for internal and external stakeholders. Additionally, the Technologist performs Back-up Dam functions during flood events.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Designs, installs, programs, maintains, and calibrates flood warning gauges, including streamflow monitoring stations, precipitation monitoring stations, and ensure stations are operational and data is obtained in real time, including after hours repairs to hydrometric equipment, to support TRCA’s flood risk management and infrastructure objectives
  • Develops and maintain stage/discharge curves for multiple streamflow monitoring stations using industry best practice to ensure production of high quality data
  • Designs and constructs small scale solar systems to power remote stations; collaborating with the team to ensure compliance with plan design, health and safety and other regulatory requirements
  • Analyses data collected, performs data QA/QC ensuring data meets internal and external expectations for accuracy and; troubleshoots where issues arise
  • Supports the preparation of hydrometric data and reports of a general and technical nature for both internal and external audiences, as well as responding to inquiries and reviewing and documenting received responses and comments
  • Under the direction of flood infrastructure staff, assist in the day-to-day operation, maintenance and surveillance of TRCA’s dams, dikes, and flood control channels
  • Perform visual river ice inspection, including inspections aided by Remote Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS/drones) to provide critical information required for predicting ice jam flooding, and collect snow water equivalent samples at various sites to determine snowpack conditions across the TRCA jurisdiction
  • Operate Remote Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS/drones) for flood infrastructure inspection, flood event documentation, and ice jam monitoring using Transport Canada regulations
  • Support flood risk management staff during flood emergencies, including actings as backup dam operator when required; be available for dam operations on a 24/7 basis when primary dam operator is not
  • Use GIS tools to assist in flood risk documentation and asset management/structure condition assessment
What will you need to succeed:

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in Environmental Science, Geology, Land Survey, Engineering or a related field
Experience
  • 3+ years of experience in water resource engineering and land survey and/or related field
Knowledge/Skill/Ability - Competencies
  • Requires advanced health and safety knowledge and certification to be able to work safely in extremely hazardous worksites, including Swift Water Rescue Technician 1, Confined Space Entry and Rescue, Working at Heights, etc.
  • High personal, professional, and corporate risk management skills due to risk to public and property
  • Able to work safely in extremely hazardous work sites – confined spaces, flooded areas, etc.
  • Specialized mathematical abilities; often pertaining to the field of study for the role (e.g., dispersion rates, correlation calculations, descriptive statistics)
  • Able to comprehend documentation that is technical or scientific in nature, skilled in writing technical reports or manuals
  • Able to self-manage workload and prioritize tasks as an ongoing challenge in a frequently fluctuating workload and multiple deadlines
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act, related Regulations and legislation
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite including online software such as MS teams, WebEx, and SharePoint); advanced MS Excel capabilities for analysis, data visualization
  • Basic knowledge of dam safety guidelines and emergency management systems
