BHSI has an exciting opportunity for a senior-level Surety Attorney, preferably located in Toronto. This role will interact with the entire Surety team and requires a customer-focused mindset to support business goals and contribute strategically to our growing global surety business. The position reports to the Head of Underwriting Support and involves managing all facets of underwriting support for Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance’s global contract and commercial surety operations.

The ideal candidate thrives in a highly collaborative environment, values simplicity over complexity, and thinks outside the box to provide practical solutions for underwriters, brokers, and customers. This role offers the chance to make significant, lasting contributions to our expanding surety organization.

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing input on risk and legal issues to surety underwriters and senior management, assisting with risk assessment across all surety business aspects, including complex contracts, bond forms, indemnity agreements, and related underwriting documents.
  • Assisting in negotiations with brokers, bond customers, obligees, and other parties involved in surety transactions.
  • Managing Co-Surety relationships and related agreements and documents.
  • Researching laws and regulations affecting surety underwriting.
  • Monitoring legal and regulatory developments impacting surety, construction, and commercial surety businesses.
  • Developing and implementing training, resource materials, and underwriting guidance for surety professionals.
  • Supporting the development of business documents for global surety as the company expands into new international markets.

Qualifications and skills:

  • Law degree required; degrees in business, engineering, or finance are a plus.
  • 10+ years of experience in surety claims, surety and construction law, or underwriting support.
  • Experience with national accounts is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of the Quebec Civil Code is a plus.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities effectively.
  • Comfort working in ambiguous situations with minimal oversight.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to work extended hours when needed.
  • Ability to travel within North America up to 30% of the time.
  • Proven ability to work well within a team environment.
