Summer Student - Parks and Cemetery

Town of Tillsonburg is looking for five (5) summer students to assist the Parks and Cemetery staff with day-to-day operation of the Parks and Cemetery areas to ensure that the areas are well maintained and the user needs are met while operating in a safe manner.

This is a seasonal student position with an option to enroll in OMERS defined benefit pension plan.

Division: Parks and Cemeteries
Reports To: Parks and Cemeteries Supervisor
Contract: May 4, 2026 - September 7, 2026
Hourly Rate: $17.60/hour
Weekly Hours: up to 40
Vacancy: 5 (new)

Responsibilities
  • Perform general landscaping duties, including mowing, trimming, weeding, and planting in parks and cemetery grounds.
  • Assist with turf maintenance, including watering, fertilizing, and aerating grassed areas.
  • Support cemetery operations by assisting with minor groundskeeping tasks such as leveling graves, topdressing, and site maintenance.
  • Maintain and clean public spaces, including pathways, playgrounds, sports fields, and park furniture.
  • Assist with tree and shrub maintenance, including pruning and debris removal.
  • Operate and maintain small equipment and tools, such as lawnmowers, trimmers, and hand tools, following safety guidelines.
  • Ensure garbage and recycling receptacles are emptied regularly in parks and cemetery areas.
  • Provide general support for municipal events and activities within parks, as needed.
  • Adhere to all workplace safety policies and procedures, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • All other duties assigned.
Qualifications
  • Completion of high school, currently enrolled in post-secondary education
  • WHMIS Certified
  • Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting (up to 50lbs), bending, and working outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Strong work ethic with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Previous experience with landscaping, grounds maintenance, or general labor is an asset but not required.
  • Valid G driver's license and clean driver’s abstract
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including weekends if required.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and following municipal policies and procedures.
  • Operation of midsized trucks, 1-ton truck with dump box an asset
  • Must be returning to school in the fall.
