Summer Student - Lifeguard & Instructor

Town of Tillsonburg is looking for eight (8) responsible and outgoing Lifeguard/Instructors that will be responsible for the safety and supervision of patrons using Town pools and the planning and instruction of swimming lessons. This is a seasonal student position with an option to enroll in OMERS defined benefit pension plan.

Department: Recreation, Culture and Parks

Division: Recreation Programs and Services

Reports To: Aquatics Supervisor

Contract: June 1, 2026 - September 2, 2026

Hourly Rate: $19.12 - $19.88 per hour (2025 rates)

Weekly Hours: up to 40

Vacancy: 8 (new)

Criminal Record Check required for this position. If over eighteen (18) years of age, a Vulnerable Sector Check will be required.

Responsibilities
  • As set down by the “Health Protection and Promotion Act - R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 565.” The standards in these regulations must be adhered to or exceeded. As set down by the Technical Standard and Safety Authority the Amusement Device Act must be adhered to or exceeded.
  • Provide Instruction and Lifeguard supervision for all Aquatic Programs.
  • Develop lesson plans and administer required evaluations.
  • Maintain daily records for classes (attendance, swim class progress, test sheets and report/progress cards).
  • Maintain pool area and recreation facilities in a clean, sanitary condition.
  • Report all accidents/incidents, problems or concerns to the Program Coordinator.
  • Attend all staff training sessions and staff meetings as scheduled by supervisors.
  • Wear the staff uniform consisting of lifeguard shirt, suit, and whistle at all times while on duty.
  • Follow all Town policies and procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Current Lifesaving Society Learn to Swim and Lifesaving Instructors
  • National Lifeguard Certification
  • Standard First Aid + CPR C
  • Advanced Provincial Trainer Status in First Aid, Lifeguard Training or Instructor Training an asset.
  • Excellent customer service and time management skills.
  • Hard working, motivated and reliable – with the ability to attend work regularly and punctually.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and accept and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to deal with the public courteously and effectively.
  • Ability to attend all orientation and training sessions.
  • Availability to work evenings and on weekends.
  • Must be returning to school in the fall.

The interview process for aquatic positions will include two components:

  • Virtual Behavioural Interview
    • Conducted online.
    • Evaluates communication, teamwork, problem‑solving, and customer service skills.
    • Provides an opportunity to discuss past experiences and situational responses.
  • Wet Interview (If successful in the initial step)
    • Conducted in the pool.
    • Required for both new and returning staff.
    • Focuses on demonstrating practical skills, safety procedures, and in‑water competency.
