Job summary

A university student organization in Hamilton, Ontario seeks a SWHAT Coordinator to oversee a volunteer service that provides safety during evening hours. Responsibilities include setting operational hours, managing volunteer shifts, promoting the service, and ensuring financial accountability. Job description

As per MSU employment policies – only MSU members in good standing may be employed part‑time with the McMaster Student Union. This includes all undergraduate students at McMaster University enrolled in 18 units or more during an academic session. Contract term: May 1 – April 30.

The Student Walk Home Attendant Team (SWHAT) is a volunteer service within the McMaster Students Union that will walk or bus users during the evening hours, 7 days a week.

The SWHAT Coordinator is responsible for all aspects of the operation of SWHAT, including setting hours of operation, scheduling shifts, promoting the service, and ensuring finances are in order.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the philosophies and fundamentals of SWHAT operations.
  • Ability to motivate and manage people as well as delegate responsibility.
  • Skills in public speaking, public relations, fundraising, human resources, and budgeting are an asset.
  • Leadership skills and time management are important.
  • Supervisory skills.
Effort & Responsibility
  • Exercise judgment in volunteer discipline.
  • The summer is crucial for setting up the service to run efficiently for the year. September is very busy with recruiting, interviewing, and training volunteers. Volunteer motivation is especially important during the second term.
  • Judgment required to make financial decisions for the department.
  • Responsible for maintaining an appropriate and positive image of the MSU.
Working Conditions
  • Working conditions vary, as the SWHAT Coordinator is also expected to participate in walks as needed.
  • Time demands may exceed stated hours of work.
Training and Experience
  • Experience with SWHAT or similar services is an asset. Participation in the annual MSU Management Trainings is required (provided).
  • Knowledge of Word, Excel, and email is an asset.
