Student, Quality and Monitoring – Hybrid

The Opportunity

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is seeking a Summer Student to join the talented team within the Information Management & Technology (IMT) branch. This is an exciting opportunity to gain hands‑on experience in a dynamic environment while supporting multiple microservices teams.

As a Student, Quality and Monitoring, you will be part of the Shared Products Services (Quality Assurance) team. You will support multiple microservices teams where TypeScript is the primary programming language, and services are deployed to Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) using ArgoCD and Azure DevOps pipelines.

In this role, you will collaborate closely with both DevOps and QA teams, with a focus on improving test automation. You will help integrate end‑to‑end (e2e) and integration testing into continuous deployment (CD) pipelines using Playwright, where appropriate. Your contributions will support streamlined quality assurance processes and faster, more reliable delivery.

This role requires strong data analytics and data visualization skills. Familiarity with Azure cloud services and monitoring tools such as Grafana is considered a strong asset.

What your day‑to‑day will look like:
  • Develop efficient, readable, and sustainable code in alignment with AER best practices, standards, and DevOps principles.
  • Support microservices teams working with TypeScript, Kubernetes, ArgoCD, and Azure DevOps.
  • Build and maintain automated tests—including API, integration, load, and end‑to‑end (e2e) tests—using Node.js and Playwright, and integrate test suites into CI/CD pipelines while contributing to quality gates.
  • Apply data analytics and visualization techniques to support platform operations, reporting, and capacity or incident trend analysis.
  • Produce timely, comprehensive, and accurate documentation as required.
  • Assist with application support tasks as needed.
What we’re looking for in you:
  • Currently enrolled in third year or higher of a Bachelor’s program in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Proficient in TypeScript, with experience in microservices architectures and RESTful APIs; familiarity with GraphQL.
  • Exposure to AKS (Kubernetes), ArgoCD (GitOps), Azure DevOps (pipelines and repositories), and CI/CD practices.
  • Experience with automated testing, including familiarity with Playwright for end‑to‑end and browser automation.
  • Strong data analytics and visualization skills, with the ability to transform metrics and logs into actionable insights.
  • Familiarity with Azure services and monitoring/observability tools, with Grafana preferred.
  • Strong troubleshooting, communication, and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to learn new technologies quickly.
  • Comfortable working in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment and adapting to change.
Additional Information:
  • Proof of enrollment in a registered post‑secondary institution including enrollment in the semester following the work term, or enrollment in a registered co‑op program will be a condition of hire.
  • Please include a cover letter / portfolio as part of your application. (If applicable)
  • All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.
  • Should an individual with the required qualifications not be available, applicants with closely related qualifications may be considered. As a result, the position may be redesigned and/or reclassified.
  • If you need accommodation during any stage of the recruitment process, email PeopleServices@aer.ca. Information relating to the need for accommodation and accommodation measures will be addressed confidentially.
What we offer you:
  • Flexible Work Program - hybrid work and flexible hours.
  • Hybrid work - employees may work remotely up to five days per calendar month, with a limit of two remote days per week.
  • Student Cohort Groups - Join vibrant student cohorts for networking, collaboration, and support.
  • Engagement Activities - Participate in workshops, seminars, and social events to enhance your skills and personal growth.
