Job description
The Team

At the Northwest Fire Centre, you'll join a dynamic and established team of diverse individuals dedicated to wildfire management and safety. Our team comprises Unit crews (22 people) and Initial Attack crews (4), with initial attack bases hosting between 18 and 52 members. You will collaborate with professionals in wildfire prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery from across the province. The Initial Attack Fire Crew Supervisor plays a critical role in executing fire suppression and hazard plans, ensuring crews are effectively mobilized in incident response. The Role

As an Initial Attack Fire Crew Supervisor, your responsibilities will shift throughout the year. In the spring, you will prepare for new staff and oversee their training. During fire season, you will ensure the team is well-supported and performing effectively in wildfire response. In the fall and winter, you will help with hiring and ramping up for the next season.

Qualifications

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Grade 12 plus 4 seasons forest fire related experience; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered; AND
  • Valid Basic First Aid (formerly OFA Level 1)
  • Successful completion of pre-employment fitness standard; AND
  • Maintain personal weights standards as required for crew type; i.e., Hover exit weight; AND
  • Minimum 2 seasons of supervisory experience
  • Valid Class 5 driver licence or equivalent

* Basic First Aid is the new name for Occupational First Aid (OFA) Level 1, as of November 2024. The name change aligns with the CSA standards in BC.

Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:

  • Incident Commander 4 or higher
  • Faller/QFT Certification

Provisos / Willingness statements

  • Valid Class 5 driver licence
  • Be flexible regarding ongoing changes in responsibilities, assignments and corporate structures
  • Keep current on emerging issues
  • Take in-house training and certification as required
  • Fly in aircraft (fixed wing and rotary) as required
  • Work extended hours, including weekends, and be on standby with limited notice in accordance with the preparedness plan
  • Travel and overnight in remote locations where accommodations may vary
  • Participate in Incident Command System positions as assigned
  • Work under adverse or stressful conditions, including smoke, extreme heat and mountainous terrain
  • Obtain and maintain certification and training for crew positions to meet operational requirements

An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies. Burns Lake is the centre of the Lakes District and offers access to extensive lakes and outdoor activities.
