Overview

The Team At the Northwest Fire Centre, you'll join a dynamic and established team dedicated to wildfire management and safety. Our team comprises Unit crews, and Initial Attack crews, with bases hosting various member counts. You'll collaborate with professionals in wildfire prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery from across the province. The Fire Crew Leader plays a critical role in executing fire suppression and hazard plans and ensuring crews are mobilized in incident response. The Role
In this role, you'll lead crews on the fireline and in day-to-day fieldwork around communities, contributing to safety and resilience. Your work in prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery will impact communities across British Columbia. This opportunity is suited for those who enjoy a fast-paced, team-based environment and want to contribute to public safety.

Position specifics: Terrace, Hazelton, Telkwa, Burns Lake, and Houston locations. This posting is to establish an eligibility list to fill current and future vacancies. A Criminal Record Check will be required. Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.

Responsibilities
  • Lead crews on the fireline and in day-to-day fieldwork around communities.
  • Execute fire suppression and hazard plans and ensure crews are effectively mobilized in incident response.
  • Collaborate with wildfire prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery professionals across the province.
Qualifications: Education and Experience
  • Grade 12 or equivalent; OR an equivalent combination of training and education may be considered; AND
  • 2 seasons forest fire related experience;
  • Valid Intermediate First Aid (formerly OFA Level 2) with Transportation endorsement; AND
  • Successful completion of New Recruit Boot Camp or Agency Equivalent; AND
  • Successfully complete pre-employment fitness standard; AND
  • Maintain personal weights standards as required for crew type; AND
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license or equivalent.

Note: Intermediate First Aid is the new name for Occupational First Aid (OFA) Level 2. The name change aligns with the CSA standards as of November 2024. For more information on crew type weight standards, review BC Wildfire Service materials.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Attended BC Wildfire Provincial Crew Leader training or agency equivalent.
  • Prior Supervisory and Fireline Supervisory experience.
  • Incident Commander 5 certification or higher.
  • Previous BC Wildfire Crew Leader experience or temporary assignments as Crew Leader.
  • Single Resource Leader 1 certification or higher.
  • Higher education in Resource Management or related field.
  • Experience delivering education or training to adults.
  • Qualified Faller Assessor/Trainer, Certified Faller, or equivalent.
Willingness Statements
  • Be flexible regarding changing responsibilities and structures.
  • Keep current on emerging issues and complete required training.
  • Fly in aircraft (fixed wing and rotary) as required.
  • Work under adverse or stressful conditions, including smoke, heat, and mountainous terrain.
  • Work extended hours, weekends, and be on standby as per preparedness plans.
  • Travel and overnight in remote locations as required.
  • Participate in Incident Command System positions as assigned.
  • Obtain and maintain certification and training for crew positions to meet operational requirements.
