Job description

Position Summary

Are you passionate about nursing and eager to expand your knowledge? We offer a training opportunity for motivated Registered Nurses dedicated to compassionate patient care in our Emergency department at the University Hospital of Northern BC.

The Staff Nurse, guided by Northern Health's vision and values, is responsible for delivering professional nursing services in accordance with standards from Northern Health, the College of BC Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM), the National Emergency Nursing Association (NENA), and the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) Code of Ethics.

Reporting to the Emergency Manager and as part of a healthcare team, the Staff Nurse applies emergency nursing skills to care for patients with varying health issues, from non-urgent to life-threatening cases.

Northern Health's Regional Emergency Training Program (REDEP) combines an online curriculum provided by Elsevier called Emergency Nursing Orientation (ENO), along with skills labs and clinical practicum, to prepare nurses for emergency care at a novice level.

  • There are 25 training positions available for 2025/2026.
  • Northern Health covers tuition, textbooks, travel expenses, and provides placement support.
  • Applicants may need to complete pre-requisite courses via part-time distance education before starting.
  • The program duration is approximately 4-6 months, including online and in-person learning, with additional study outside scheduled hours.
  • Must have completed Heart and Stroke BLS within the last 6 months.
  • Flexibility for practicums is required.
  • Prior experience in medical/surgical wards is preferred.
  • Current BLS certification within one year is mandatory before skills labs.
  • Preference for those who have completed an ECG course prior to REDEP.
  • Applicants must pass the program to work in the department, with an 18-month return of service required post-completion.

  • Shift: Monday to Friday, Days, 08:00-16:00.
