Purpose of Role: Support the design, development, testing and maintenance of software products used for the Department of National Defence (DND) River Class Destroyer (RCD) project. Weir Marine Engineering supports the RCD Project Management Office (PMO) within DND office at the Bluenose building in Dartmouth, NS. The Software Specialist may have the opportunity to support other project activities as required by project demands, including Synthetic Environment Support, and Performance Modelling and Simulation (M&S) activities. This is a full-time, permanent position with a requirement for regular work both in-office and onboard RCN ships.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Software Engineering: Design and build software to support the RCD project. Participate in entire software lifecycle, including requirements capture, testing, deployment and user support.
  • Technical Documentation: Documenting and presenting technical data for stakeholder review; articulating and presenting detailed technical arguments when necessary in a manner that is clear, logical and simple.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with a diverse team of engineers and naval specialists, providing technical support and developing solutions to engineering challenges.
  • Support to client: Maintaining positive, friendly, collaborative relationships with team members, and internal and external stakeholders. Liaison with subject matter experts, DND customers and suppliers.
  • Safety First: Demonstrate 100% commitment to our zero harm behaviors in support of our drive towards developing a world‑class safety culture.
Job Knowledge/Education and Qualifications:
  • Mandatory: Must obtain a Government of Canada security clearance, which necessitates Canadian citizenship and a minimum of 10 years of continuous residence in Canada.
  • Mandatory: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Computer Science.
  • Mandatory: Software development experience (frontend, backend or full stack), particularly with Django (Python), Node.js, Relational Databases, and C++.
  • Desirable: Experience with Cyber Security and Cloud deployment.
  • Desirable: Experience using Version Control Software (Perforce, Git).
  • Desirable: Experience using Automated Testing Frameworks.
  • Desirable: Experience in the defence industry or working with Naval systems.
  • Mandatory: Skilled in reading, writing, and speaking English, with the ability to effectively communicate at all levels (both in-person and electronically) with peers, supervisors, and clients. Capable of drafting reports, technical correspondence, and procedure manuals.
