The Opportunity

Software Engineer II - VANCOUVER, CANADA

We are seeking a Software Engineer II to join our Data Foundation team. You will contribute to building and maintaining our cloud data platforms, working alongside senior engineers on data pipelines, platform features, and operational improvements. This role offers the opportunity to deepen your expertise in cloud-native data engineering while growing toward senior-level ownership and independence.

What You'll Do

Build and Maintain Data Platforms

Contribute to the development of scalable data pipelines and platform features on AWS. You will implement solutions using modern data processing frameworks, working within established architectural patterns while learning to evaluate trade‑offs and propose improvements.

Grow Your Technical Expertise

Deepen your skills in distributed data processing, cloud architecture, and data engineering best practices. Work with technologies like Spark, Glue, and modern data platforms while building toward fluency with GenAI‑powered development tools. Senior engineers will provide guidance on complex problems while you take increasing ownership of your areas of focus.

Collaborate Across the Team

Work closely with senior engineers, product managers, and platform engineers to deliver on team objectives. Participate in design discussions, code reviews, and technical planning. Communicate effectively about your work and proactively seek input when navigating unfamiliar territory.

Own Production Operations

Embrace our You Build It, You Run It culture by participating in on‑call rotations and taking ownership of the systems you help build. Respond to incidents, contribute to root cause analysis, and help improve monitoring and alerting for the platform. You are expected to operate production systems confidently, escalating appropriately when issues exceed your current expertise.

What You'll Bring

Who We Are Looking For

You are an engineer who has moved beyond entry‑level work and is ready to take on more complex challenges. You can design and implement software components with guidance, and you’re building judgment about when to move forward independently versus when to seek input. You’re curious about how systems work at scale and eager to deepen your expertise in cloud and data engineering.

You communicate clearly, collaborate well with teammates, and take pride in delivering quality work. You’re comfortable asking questions and learning from feedback. You want to grow toward senior‑level ownership and are looking for an environment that will support that trajectory.

Required Qualifications

  • 3-4 years of professional software development experience with exposure to complex software projects.

  • Proficiency in Java, Python, and SQL for application development and data processing.

  • Working knowledge of AWS services and cloud architecture, with hands‑on experience building and maintaining cloud‑based applications.

  • Familiarity with data processing frameworks (e.g., Apache Spark, AWS Glue) and strong interest in developing expertise in this area.

  • Understanding of software development methodologies and tools (version control, CI/CD, code review practices).

  • Familiarity with Docker and containerization concepts.

  • Solid understanding of data structures and algorithms.

  • Experience with on‑call rotations and production operations in a team‑owned environment.

  • Expected Salary: 100,000 -118,000 CAD

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with cloud data platforms (e.g., Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery) for data warehousing or analytics.

  • Experience with event streaming technologies (Kafka, Kinesis) or data pipeline orchestration (Airflow, Dagster).

  • Exposure to Knowledge Graphs or Data Ontologies concepts.

  • Interest in Generative AI and experience using AI‑powered coding assistants (GitHub Copilot, Claude Code) for development productivity.

  • Experience with observability tools (CloudWatch, Prometheus/Grafana, Splunk) for monitoring and debugging.

  • Familiarity with modern table formats (Apache Iceberg) or query engines (Trino, DuckDB).
