Amazon Traffic Engineering builds innovative managed compute and networking solutions that empower Amazon Software Engineers to build and operate services for Amazon’s customers that are secure, highly available, and easy to scale. We identify and support the foundational infrastructure capabilities, tools, and datasets needed to support rapid global expansion of Amazon's SOA infrastructure, built on top of AWS technologies. Our team focuses on robust and scalable architecture patterns and engineering best practices, driving adoption of ever-evolving and cutting‑edge AWS technologies.

As a Software Development Manager (SDM), you will lead a team of brilliant engineers focusing cloud‑native networking features like security, authentication, authorization, load balancing, throttling, routing, and more. Your products will continuously improve KPIs (availability, efficiency, productivity) on behalf of service owners by managing SOA concerns, providing automation, tooling, and higher‑level abstractions. You will use ML and GenAI technologies to improve performance, load management, and operations across a portfolio of networking products.

As the leader of this space, you will hire, develop, and retain deep technical team members. You will own defining the long‑term vision, driving long and short‑term product strategy, working with internal Amazon customers as well as partnering with stakeholders. You will be responsible for setting the team culture, best practices, and planning. You will ensure the timely delivery of new product and feature launches. You will get to work in a deeply technical space with experts in solving cutting‑edge problems, unique to the size and scope of Amazon.

Our vision is to make Amazon’s Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) more manageable and developers more productive by building an ecosystem of managed abstractions that allow Amazon Retail developers to focus on their unique business logic and business operations, knowing that security, authentication, authorization, load balancing, throttling and routing “just work” and are always consistent with Amazon best practices.

Key job responsibilities
  • Drive prioritization and planning of projects and features
  • Thinking big and working with leadership, cross teams and business stakeholders to define vision, strategy and roadmap
  • Facilitating the design of the architecture of these distributed and highly scalable systems to solve complex problems
  • Monitoring, validation, and operation of production services
  • Owning the inputs and the business outcome through cultivating a culture of relentless auditing and metric monitoring, automatically where possible
  • Setting clear, measurable quality goals for the organization and collaborate across orgs to drive achieving them
  • Mentoring and promoting team members and help leaders to grow the organization
About the team

Managed Connectivity builds cloud‑native networking and connectivity solutions for SDO (Stores, Digital & Other) Service Owners, using AWS primitives, to seamlessly connect with each other and Amazon's customers by providing managed secure, resilient, and performant connectivity infrastructure.

Basic Qualifications
  • 2+ years of engineering team management experience
  • 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience
  • 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
  • 4+ years of leading the definition and development of multi‑tier web services experience
  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

The base salary for this position ranges from $171,400/year up to $286,200/year. Salary is based on a number of factors and may vary depending on job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign‑on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
