Job description

We are looking for an underwriter to join the Central and Eastern Canada Property team and contribute to our sustainable growth and profitability. You will be based in Toronto and be part of a team of experienced Underwriters supporting the General Property business in Canada, reporting to and working closely with the Head of Property Canada.

The position offers you the opportunity to develop key broker and client relationships, focusing on large corporate and mid‑market risk segments including international structured placements.

Beyond your core underwriting responsibilities, you will also contribute to cross‑functional initiatives, support strategic projects, and help shape the direction of the Canadian Property business. You will provide property underwriting expertise to our clients and ensure compliance with Swiss Re underwriting guidelines.

Key responsibilities
  • Production underwriting position responsible for handling large quota share, shared and layered placements, global structured programmes as well as 100% single carrier deals.
  • Drive portfolio quality through effective risk selection, technical pricing, and adherence to governance and guidelines.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key brokers and clients, including regular effective communication.
  • Represent Swiss Re Corporate Solutions in meetings with client, brokers, and other SR Group entities.
  • Learn and employ Swiss Re underwriting tools to develop pricing, terms, and conditions at an account level in line with underwriting guidelines and corporate strategy.
  • Assist in the timely issuance of binders and policies as well as the collection of premiums as necessary.
  • Review, assess and negotiate contract language effectively to protect both Swiss Re and our stakeholders' interests.
  • Prepare proposals, binders, and policies in accordance with and adhering to internal guidelines.
  • Continuously update and develop your specific industry knowledge, skills, and expertise and keep abreast of emerging issues.
  • Mentor junior underwriters and support team capability development.

About You
Educational background
  • University degree or equivalent with a business or finance component preferred.
  • Professional designations, such as Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP), Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional (FCIP), CRM, are strong assets.
Professional Experience
  • Property underwriting experience, ideally including international exposures and complex corporate risks.
  • Knowledge of and proficiency in the use of underwriting tools, applications, and guidelines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated success underwriting large, sophisticated accounts in a competitive market.
  • Strong command of underwriting tools, analytics, and portfolio management concepts.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and relationship‑building skills.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to take ownership, influence outcomes, and drive projects forward.
  • Strong analytical capabilities and interest in emerging risks and industry trends.
  • Proven ability to collaborate across functions and geographies.
Language skills
  • Fluency in English; French would be an asset.
