The Opportunity :

Our WSP's ERI (Energy, Resources and Industry) sector supports clients from coast to coast. From small installations to multi-phase integrated megaprojects, we serve industries including oil and gas, mining, heavy industrial plants, renewable power, and energy projects such as solar, wind, and hydropower. We focus on providing design, engineering, and environmental services that contribute to climate adaptation and mitigation, water and marine resource protection, biodiversity restoration, and support for clients transitioning to low-carbon solutions. To meet our growth challenges, WSP is seeking a Project Director for our Ontario or Calgary, Alberta offices.

The Project Director will be a strong program manager capable of leading and influencing a team of managers and engineers on complex major projects. The role requires hands-on project management experience in the energy and heavy industrial sectors, with strong governance and decision-making skills to manage current projects and develop new business opportunities. The successful candidate will report to the Vice President of Major Projects and ideally be based in Calgary, Alberta.

What you can expect to do here :

  • Make recommendations and participate in decision-making on technical aspects of projects, including developing initial concepts
  • Lead project planning, resourcing, staffing, supply, and subcontract management
  • Prepare and implement Project Management Plans (Work, Risk, Safety, Quality, Communications)
  • Define, develop, and document project budgets and schedules, approve changes, and forecast
  • Establish project scope, create WBS, verify scope with clients, and monitor changes
  • Review engineering, construction, and procurement schedules for compliance
  • Manage deadlines, communicate proactively about schedule and cost conflicts
  • Assess resource capabilities and initiate actions to meet project commitments
  • Mentor team members on design, schedules, and costs
  • Ensure project quality, reliability, schedule, and budget targets are met
  • Review drawings, budgets, and quotations for cost-effectiveness and profitability
  • Build strong internal and external client relationships
  • Foster an inclusive, high-performance culture
  • Manage stakeholder groups effectively
  • Perform other duties as required

What you'll bring to WSP :

  • 15-20+ years' experience in project management or similar roles
  • Formal project management training; PMP preferred
  • 4-8 years in an EPCM environment
  • Experience managing energy and heavy industrial projects, specifically in:
  • Midstream projects like gas processing plants in Alberta, or

  • Mining or heavy industrial projects in Ontario/Atlantic
  • Engineering degree or technical diploma; P.Eng. is an asset
  • Proven track record of completing projects on time and on budget with high client satisfaction
  • Proficient in MS Office, vendor, and database software
  • Familiar with project management software tools
  • French language skills are an asset
