Job description
Some of what you will do:

The Senior Manager of Health and Safety plays a critical leadership role in shaping and executing the health and safety strategy across Staples Canada's Business Units. This position requires a seasoned professional with deep expertise in occupational health and safety, regulatory compliance, and risk mitigation. The role is responsible for fostering a culture of safety, ensuring alignment with provincial and federal legislation, and driving continuous improvement in safety practices across diverse environments—including retail stores, warehouses, corporate and delivery operations. Strong leadership, conflict resolution, and relationship-building skills are essential to influence stakeholders, support incident prevention and investigation, and promote a safe and healthy workplace for all employees.

Specifically, You Will:
  • Lead the development and execution of a national Health & Safety strategy, shaping policies and programs across retail, warehouse, delivery, and corporate environments.
  • Drive compliance excellence by overseeing COR audits, ISO certifications, and provincial safety programs, positioning Staples as an industry leader in workplace safety.
  • Act as a trusted advisor and subject matter expert, influencing senior leadership and guiding teams on legislative requirements, risk mitigation, and best practices.
  • Champion continuous improvement through incident prevention, investigation analysis, and proactive engagement with governing bodies and Ministry of Labour.
  • Own critical programs such as Transportation of Dangerous Goods and Fleet Safety, ensuring safe operations across all business units.
  • Play a key role in business continuity planning and executive committees, contributing to strategic decisions that impact national operations.
  • Manage budgets and vendor relationships while leading cross-functional initiatives to promote a strong safety culture and deliver measurable results.
Some of what you need:
  • Certified Registered Safety Professional designation (CRSP) and /or Canadian Health and Safety Consultant designation (CHSC) is recommended.
  • University Degree or equivalent experience.
  • 5-7 years of experience in Health and Safety management with some experience in designing and implementing return-to-work programs.
  • 3-5 years experience in the retail industry
  • Proven results in participation in various provincial COR audits and ISO certifications
  • Multi-province workers compensation board and Provincial Enforcement experience.
  • Proven management experience and a track record for driving quality and innovation to deliver results
  • Proven ability to plan and implement change
  • Proven ability to liaise with and build-effective working relationships with various business partners in forging and managing collaborative strategic relationships and partnerships both internally and with external providers.
  • Have extensive knowledge of current and emerging workplace trends and knowledge of national occupational health and safety legislation.
  • Understand policy and program development and implementation.
  • Proven track record in designing and delivering multi site, national Health and Safety Programs.
