Job description
Overview

The Global WAM Accounting & Reporting Accounting Advisory team serves as a key resource for internal and external partners worldwide, offering financial information, analysis, and decision support to enhance shareholder value. Reporting to the Director of Accounting Advisory, the Senior Financial Analyst provides accounting advice for General Account and Private Market investments, supports transaction advisory on consolidation and derecognition issues, and participates in implementing new accounting standards. The role also supports the Private Alternative Investment Valuation Committee with oversight of private investment valuations, including Real Estate, Infrastructure, and Private Equity. The ideal candidate possesses technical accounting knowledge, particularly in private alternative investments, and stays current on IFRS, US GAAP, and NAIC standards, demonstrating creativity and strategic thinking to collaboratively address critical issues.

Position Responsibilities
  • Accounting Advisory: Research and provide guidance on the appropriate and practical accounting treatment for all new private equity or alternative long duration assets, as well as new products and entity structures.
  • Assist in providing transaction advisory support on issues such as consolidation, derecognition, and participation in the implementation of new accounting standards for investments, in collaboration with the Group Accounting Policy team.
  • Serve as a trusted accounting advisor to the General Account Front Office and Private Markets Asset Class teams (including MIMPEC and MIMTA), communicating complex accounting topics and recommending changes aligned with business/strategic goals.
  • Monitor new accounting pronouncements and analyze their impact on the organization; ensure implications for the Investment Division are understood and accounting policies remain appropriate.
  • Collaborate with legal, corporate policy, capital advisory, and investment teams across US, Canada, and Asia segments to launch new third-party products or mandates to achieve desired accounting treatment.
  • Prepare memos and formal documentation on accounting treatments discussed with Private Markets stakeholders.
  • Support ad-hoc projects and implementation of new accounting standards within the accounting advisory area.
  • Prepare first-level interim and full reviews of internally valued private equity investments and summarize results.
  • Coordinate and perform the first level of review for MIMPEC fund valuations.
Required Qualifications
  • A professional accounting designation or current pursuit of CA/CPA; a Finance designation (CFA) is a plus.
  • 2+ years of accounting/financial services experience.
  • Background in technical accounting policy, advisory, consulting, or similar function within a large public accounting firm or financial institution is preferable.
  • Working knowledge of IFRS and US GAAP; some knowledge of NAIC accounting is preferable.
  • Ability to quickly understand and apply new concepts with diligence.
  • Strong project management skills to effectively oversee special projects.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to work productively with business unit partners and to exchange information with others.
