A global engineering staffing provider is seeking a Senior Electrical Safety Engineer in Toronto. POSITION DESCRIPTION
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Engineering.
General Accountabilities:
As a safety professional utilize safety principles, loss control management, risk assessment, incident analysis, and safety management systems and processes to assist our client in identifying, prioritizing and addressing public electrical safety hazards and issues. Assist Operations with maintaining their inspection practice, ensuring practices and policies are aligned with our client's safety risk management philosophy. Establish processes and procedures related to the requirements for our client to access safety risk, measure its safety impact and verify the effectiveness of its various safety services. Lead, collect, analyze, and report on incident/fire reviews. Apply knowledge of electrical and forensic engineering, and sound investigative techniques, including cause and effect analysis in incident reviews. Maintain knowledge of relevant safety regulations, electrical standards, and best practices in forensics and investigative methodologies. Position is also responsible for planning, monitoring, and coordinating research and planning activities. Responsible for collecting, analyzing, interpreting, summarizing and presenting qualitative data for the purpose of planning and policy development or other goals of the organization. Develop our client's strategies on health and safety requirements. Identify needs related to future development of public electrical safety initiatives and services.
Education:
Requires a comprehensive and professional knowledge of health and safety principles and practices including aspects of risk and loss control management, safety audit and root cause analysis. Requires computer application skills including communication training for presentation, report and investigation requirements.
Requires a broad knowledge of electrical engineering principles and theory, including related mathematics, circuits, physics, etc., as these apply to electrical equipment and installations, to provide advice and guidance on electrical safety incidents and investigations. Requires strong knowledge of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, product standards, Canadian Electrical Code Part 3 as well as other standards in order to understand electrical theory and practice as these apply to the installation and maintenance of electrical equipment, design layout and specifications.
This knowledge is considered to be normally required through the completion of four years of University training an appropriate discipline.
Experience:
Requires significant experience in the field of public safety or health and safety particularly in a construction or industrial setting. Requires practical knowledge related to risk and loss control management, accident/incident investigation and root cause analysis, In safety audit processes and principles, including safety data gathering and analysis of results. Requires a background in areas that have been forward in development and improvement of safety awareness, practices, and programs. Requires knowledge of appropriate safety topics/legislation/rules and regulations that would allow for certification as a safety professional in this field of endeavour.
Requires experience with the practices of electrical installations, equipment design and a detailed understanding of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code and Distribution Regulation to assess and prepare changes to it and to develop product safety standards. Requires experience carrying out and documenting complex engineering and technical analyses of electrical installations and equipment and experience to provide an operational consulting service throughout the company. Requires experience to understand the preparation, intent, meaning and application of codes and the function and operation of the testing laboratories and how they affect inspection activities. A period of eight to ten years is considered necessary to gain this experience.
