The role:

The mid-level economist will lead and support policy-relevant economic research by leveraging advanced econometric techniques, modern analytical tools, and alternative data sources. This role enhances Scotiabank Economics’ strategic insights by strengthening macroeconomic analysis, informing economic policy analysis, and delivering high-impact commentary to internal and external stakeholders. The senior economist will contribute to emerging and thematic issues—such as global trade, business investment, demographics and other shifting structural forces—while supporting other departmental work on other core economic topics. Success in this role requires rigorous econometric skills, independence, intellectual curiosity, flexibility, and strong collaboration.

Is this role right for you? In this role you will:
1. Drive advanced economic and policy analysis:
  • Apply rigorous econometric methods to strengthen thematic, economic, and fiscal policy research with a primary focus on structural economic forces.
  • Apply a wide range of econometric, statistical, and computational tools to analyze economic trends, policy impacts, and thematic issues to generate data-driven insights.
  • Provide analysis on key structural forces impacting the medium-term economic outlook.
  • Working within the economic policy team to collaboratively develop thoughtful policy proposals, while also collaborating closely with the modeling and forecasting team.
2. Innovate using emerging tools and data:
  • Integrate advanced technologies (e.g., AI, LLMs) and alternative data sources (e.g., big data, high-frequency indicators) into economic research.
  • Develop insights that support strategic decision-making for senior management, the Chief Economist, Directors and VPs.
  • Collaborate across teams to deliver joint outputs and advance department-wide priorities.
3. Communicate insights to diverse audiences:
  • Deliver clear, impactful economic commentary through reports, presentations, and media engagements.
  • Prepare thought leadership pieces for industry publications to strengthen Scotiabank’s brand.
  • Provide perspectives on both specialized topics and the broader economic outlook as needed.
4. Foster Scotiabank Economics’ human capital in accordance with Scotiabank values:
  • Assist in managing departmental operations to ensure timely and effective workflow and optimal resource utilization.
  • Oversee economists as needed, providing guidance beyond the role’s primary responsibilities.
  • Mentor junior team members to support their career development objectives.
5. Expand Scotiabank Economics' collaborative efforts to bolster Scotiabank’s financial performance and advance its strategic objectives:
  • Drive a customer-focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
  • Liaise with other departments within the organization, as needed, to develop strategies and provide economic analyses, forecasts, and perspectives to support broader corporate objectives.
Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? We’d love to work with you if you have:
  • Graduate degree in Economics, Applied Economics, Finance, Data Science or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 7 years related experience in business economics with policy-relevant experience.
  • Experience working with emerging tools and datasets.
  • Proven track record of economic analysis and/or publication experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of economics, financial markets, and macroeconomic analysis.
  • Proficient in econometrics with hands-on experience in statistical programming (e.g., R, Python, Stata).
  • Ability to design and execute original, innovative, and client-focused research projects, and collaborate with policy analysts to translate complex findings into actionable insights or policy recommendations.
  • Skilled in working with large and alternative datasets, including data cleaning, transformation, and visualization.
  • Interest and experience in applying artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLMs) to enhance economic analysis.
  • Solid understanding of the fiscal, monetary, and structural policy landscape and its implications for sustainable economic growth.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce accurate, high-quality work under pressure and within tight deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong organizational and presentation abilities.
