Athabasca University\'s Facilities department is currently recruiting for the role(s) of Casual call-in Security Guards.

Are you a reliable and professional individual looking for flexible work opportunities? We are establishing a pool of Casual Call-In Security Guards to support our organization on an as-needed basis. This role is ideal for those who thrive in dynamic environments and can respond quickly when called upon. As part of our security team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and security of our facilities, staff, and visitors.

Position
  • Act as the primary security contact outside of normal business hours, including evenings, weekends, statutory holidays, and during times when the University is closed for business (e.g., special events).
  • Monitor and secure premises to ensure the safety of staff, students, and visitors.
  • Respond promptly to security incidents, alarms, and emergency situations.
  • Conduct regular patrols and maintain accurate incident reports.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external emergency services when required.
  • This position is expected to work outside of regular hours and be available on an on-call basis.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Experience and/or training in security, law enforcement, corrections, or a related field is an asset.
  • Availability to work evening shifts, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must obtain and maintain a clean security and criminal record check.
  • Physically able to perform building walkabout checks and respond quickly in emergency situations.
  • Must have a valid Alberta Class 5 Operators license and provide current driver’s abstract.
  • First Aid / CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Basic computer skills for logging and reporting.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and write clear, accurate logs.
  • Must have a courteous and professional manner in dealing with people.
  • This position requires that the incumbent be identifiable as a security presence and maintain a neat and professional appearance and deportment.
  • Must be trustworthy, discreet and treat all matters with appropriate confidentiality.
  • This position requires the incumbent to be prepared to assist and direct, while at the same time be perceived as the security authority.
