The Safety Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Zoo’s workplace safety program, including policy and procedure development and compliance, accident prevention, training, and record management. This position also manages workers’ compensation and general liability claims, as well as assists with various Human Resources tasks and functions.
POSITION DUTIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Oversees the Zoo’s workplace safety program, including:
- Developing, reviewing, and recommending safety policies and procedures, while ensuring compliance with general industry safety practices and standards.
- Conducting emergency drills in accordance with Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) standards.
- Leading the Zoo’s safety committee.
- Ensuring local, state, federal, OSHA and AZA safety standards are met, as well as maintaining a current and working knowledge of laws, rules and regulations pertaining to safety and risk management.
- Advising and assisting management regarding safety practices and procedures.
- Conducting safety inspections and audits of Zoo work areas and sites.
- Coordinating various safety training and education for employees and management.
- Maintaining and tracking required safety records, including certificates of insurance, Safety Data Sheets, etc.

Manages workers’ compensation and general liability claims, including:
- Reporting employee accidents/injuries to work comp carrier and coordinating claim management.
- Reporting guest accidents/incidents and property damage claims to TPA and coordinating claim management.
- Researching, investigating, and analyzing injuries and accidents to identify trends.
- Coordinating with various departments to create, recommend, and implement solutions to safety issues.
- Maintaining files and tracking sheets related to employee and guest accidents/injuries.

Assists the Human Resources department with various tasks as needed, serving as a backup to ensure vital responsibilities may be performed in case of absence.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- EDUCATION & FORMAL TRAINING:
- Bachelor's Degree in related field preferred.
- EXPERIENCE:
- 3-5 years’ experience in occupational health and safety programs, risk reduction or related field required.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local safety standards, laws and regulations preferred.
- Experience with workers’ compensation practices and procedures preferred.
- Ability to interpret laws, rules, regulations, and other information specific to a variety of health and safety investigation and prevention issues required.
- Ability to represent the company in a professional and positive manner.
- Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
- Strong public speaking skills preferred.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office, preferred.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have valid driver’s license.
- Must have or be able to obtain negative TB test.
- Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, and evening hours, in all weather extremes.
- Must pass a background and drug screening.
