Qualifications

  • Graduate of recognized Diploma Program in Practical Nursing.
  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Knowledge of CNO Standards regarding RPN scope of practice.
  • Understanding of MHA and relevant legislation.
  • CPR/AED Certification within the last 2 years.
  • Completion of Prevention of Violence in the Workplace training (C.P.I.) required.
  • GPA training and P.I.E.C.E.S training, or other related dementia care training.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • Prior experience with clients in Long Term Care and the community.
  • Ability to develop therapeutic relations with patients.
  • Ability to function as a member of the inter-disciplinary team.
  • Basic computer skills required.
  • Valid Ontario drivers license (travel is required).
  • English level A- is mandatory in oral comprehension, expression, reading and writing.

Responsibilities

Geriatric Psychiatry

This program assesses and treats mental illnesses in adults over 65. It focuses on improving quality of life and recovery for older adults dealing with conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease, and other dementias. Care is provided in collaboration with families, primary care providers, and community agencies.

This position is part of the Geriatric Psychiatry Outreach Services to Long Term Care Homes (LTCH). The goal is to address the complex mental health needs and assist in the management of responsive behaviours for seniors living in a variety of community Long Term Care Homes (LTCH), in order to foster a supportive care environment, optimized quality of life and prevent unnecessary psychiatric admissions and emergency room visits. It is a change-agent role which provides comprehensive nursing consultation to staff, administrators, residents & their families in collaboration with Royal Geriatric Psychiatry Outreach services to Long Term Care Homes. This includes direct practice, education, research and ongoing evaluation.

The position provides comprehensive nursing consultation to staff, administrators, residents and their families in collaboration with Royal Geriatric Psychiatry Outreach services to Long Term Care Homes. This includes direct practice, education, research and ongoing evaluation.

Qualifications
  • Graduate of recognized Diploma Program in Practical Nursing.
  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Knowledge of CNO Standards regarding RPN scope of practice.
  • Understanding of MHA and relevant legislation.
  • CPR/AED Certification within the last 2 years.
  • Completion of Prevention of Violence in the Workplace training (C.P.I.) required.
  • GPA (Gentle Persuasive Approach) training and P.I.E.C.E.S training, or other related dementia care training.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • Prior experience with clients in Long Term Care and the community.
  • Technical skills such as glucometer reading, vital signs, injection skills, physical assessment/mental health assessment, catheterization, medication administration, O2 administration, basic wound care, suctioning, safe patient handling, bladder scanning, ECT recovery, skin care and feeding.
  • Ability to develop therapeutic relations with patients.
  • Ability to function as a member of the inter-disciplinary team.
  • Basic computer skills required.
  • Valid Ontario drivers license (travel is required).
  • English level A- is mandatory in oral comprehension, expression, reading and writing. Bilingual (English/French) is considered an asset.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of mechanical lifts, transferring and positioning techniques.
  • 2 years recent experience with older adults with psychiatric/mental health illness.

Salary Range: 37.24 to 39.02 per hour
