The Opportunity

The Pharmacy Technician will collaborate with pharmacists and pharmacy practice assistants to ensure safe medication preparation and dispensing. Responsibilities include technical checks of medications, clarifying telephone medication orders, narcotic destruction, precepting students, administering medications by injection (permit required), and providing technical education. They will also conduct medication histories within Children’s and Women’s Health surgical units. All activities must comply with federal and provincial legislation and professional standards, ensuring accountability and safety.

Hours of Work

0700-1500, 0800-1600, 1300-2100; days, evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call rotations; 75 hours bi-weekly.

Qualifications

  • Accredited pharmacy technician training program (CCAPP) or enrolled in a bridging program
  • Licensure as a Registered Pharmacy Technician with the Nova Scotia College of Pharmacists; or eligible for licensure
  • Practice within legal requirements, uphold professionalism, and adhere to standards and policies
  • Participate in patient care, ensuring health and medication needs are met collaboratively
  • Implement safe and effective product distribution
  • Contribute to drug distribution management and safety policies
  • Knowledge of NAPRA Standards, pharmacy automation technologies, medication names, compounding, and relevant legislation
  • Accurate medication calculations and effective communication skills
  • Commitment to continuous learning and ability to work in a fast-paced environment

Additional Information

For candidates not yet licensed, a funded bridging program may be available in exchange for a return of service. Until licensure, candidates will be paid on the Pharmacy Practice Assistant scale.
