Job Description

Summary of Duties but not limited to:

  • Provide comprehensive emergency care to adult (female and male) survivors of sexual assault and/or domestic violence who present to Women’s College Hospital or one of the hospital mobile sites
  • Assess physical, mental & emotional status of victims as well as their coping strategies
  • Provide emotional support/reassurances/validation/ crisis counselling
  • Perform physical examination and collection of hospital specimens for STI’s, pregnancy, etc.
  • Collect forensic evidence
  • Carry out prescribed treatments
  • Refer clients to local support service agencies
  • Explain options for care in SADVCC
  • Provide accurate verbal and written information to clients about sexual assault, treatment rendered and follow-up services available
  • Maintain thorough & accurate documentation according to established criteria
  • Provide courtroom testimony as required
  • Provides outreach activities to other professionals/community partners/public
  • Participate in program research activities to build relationships and linkages with services related to violence issues across WCH and the GTA
  • Participate in QA, policy development and evaluation
  • Maintain treatment room and follow up clinic

Qualifications

  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing is Preferred
  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario is required
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support is required
  • Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Training preferred
  • Crisis counselling skills
  • Experience in emergency nursing preferred
  • Experience working in diverse communities preferred.
  • Physical assessment skills including vaginal examination; venipuncture
  • Confident working independently
  • Able to manage stressful situations
  • Effective self-care strategies
  • Teaching/public speaking experience
  • Commitment to an understanding of & practice consistent with a feminist analysis of violence against women and cultural competency
  • Ability to speak a second language is strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to the strategic goals of the organization
  • Demonstrated record of good performance and acceptable attendance will be considered as part of the selection criteria
  • Professional behavior and communication that meets the standards of the professional regulatory college, and the standards of Women’s College Hospital
  • This position plays a critical role in acting as an advocate for safety and will demonstrate principles, practices and processes that will optimize a safe environment for all.
