Position Summary:

The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist is responsible for the provision of direct client services including assessment, consultation and treatment. The incumbent will participate in service, program and corporate professional activities supportive of direct services and organizational objectives, to support and foster a patient/family centered team-base approach to care delivery. The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist delivers care consistent with the vision and values of the organization.

Qualifications:
  • Knowledge and skills in a range of therapeutic approaches, including brief therapies, motivational interviewing and general understanding of cognitive behavioral therapy and the foundations of DBT with individuals, and groups. Experience applying these skills to Psychiatric clients is preferred
  • Experience in developing and facilitating adult education programs relevant to the client group
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of an interprofessional health care team
  • Commitment to standards of excellence and the concept of accountability
  • Computer competency
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative team approach and to adhere to accepted standards of personal conduct
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of Mental Health Act, Substitute Decision Act, Health Care and the Health Care Consent Act
  • Knowledge of the Windsor - Essex social and health services
  • French Language proficiency is an asset

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Analyze objective and subjective data obtained from clients
  • Communicate and document the outlined rehab plan clearly and concisely as per reporting formats
  • Develop intervention plans including purpose, rationale, goals, outcomes and evaluation
  • Educate clients and families about disease process, the concepts of healthy leisure lifestyle, available services, etc.
  • Identify the necessary skills required for success in the clients chosen environment
  • Implement Leisure Education and Recreation participation activities for clients based on interests and abilities
  • Implement programs of Therapeutic Recreation treatment for patients being treated in inpatient/ outpatient mental health.
  • Maintain documentation in accordance with department, program, organizational and professional standards
  • Maintain patients overall physical, social and emotional well being
  • Provide information on adaptive aids as required
  • Work as a member of the interprofessional team to accomplish client goals and expected outcomes
  • Completes and submits workload measurements/statistics, and other documentation as required
  • Completes discharge planning by consulting with physicians, nurses, social workers, and other health care workers
Education and/or Certification:
  • College Diploma – Recreation & Therapeutic Recreation – required
  • Undergraduate Degree – Recreation with a Therapeutic Specialty – preferred
  • 2 + years working in a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist capacity with individuals with serious mental illness - required
