Job Description
Position Purpose
This position is part of a collaborative management team and provides day-to-day supervision of program staff, ensuring effective teamwork, high standards of work quality and customer service excellence to meet the needs of shelter clients in a housing-focused, holistic manner in accordance with policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a member of the management team as required, particularly regarding day-to-day delivery of services.
- Provide oversight and supervision of Social Service Staff and day-to-day operations in accordance with the mission and values of The Salvation Army.
- Ensure duties assigned are completed in a safe, appropriate, and efficient manner across shifts.
- Participate in hiring, orientation, and evaluation of staff and students as applicable.
- Provide support and supervision during shifts, assist with crisis intervention, conflict diffusion and problem solving to ensure safety of residents and staff; respond to client grievances.
- Schedule staff to ensure coverage for all shifts, including sick relief, holidays and vacation coverage.
- Provide direction and support to social service staff as required.
- Chair daily shift changes to ensure proper information transmission and maintain daily shift change records.
- Monitor and review program staff communication logs to ensure proper documentation and communication between shifts.
- Provide statistical and evaluative information to management when required.
- May provide back-up support or assume functions at the front desk or other program areas as needed.
- Identify staff training requirements and make recommendations regarding staff development for those supervised.
Health and Safety
- Work in compliance with the Ontario Health & Safety Act and Regulations.
- Work in a manner required by the employer and use prescribed safety equipment.
- Follow proper procedures in the event of a workplace injury or illness and conduct incident investigations when required.
- Participate in all health & safety related accidents and injury investigations.
Organizational Responsibilities

This position description will be reviewed with the employee and supervisor regularly. Amendments can be made at the employer’s discretion.
Working Conditions
- Flexibility in hours and schedule to meet operational needs.
- Mostly regular business hours with some evenings and weekends required.
- Rotational on-call duties.
- This is a management position under the Ontario Employment Standards Act; compensation reflects average minimum weekly hours of 40 per week and does not follow standard ESA hours rules.

Education and Experience Qualifications
- Completed an undergraduate degree in a related field.
- Minimum of two (2) years of related experience, including supervisory experience in a residential setting and work with marginalized clients.
- Non-violent crisis intervention certification and CPR/First Aid certification would be an asset or willingness to obtain.
- Valid Ontario class G driver’s license, own vehicle and insurance; provide a current driver’s abstract satisfactory to the Salvation Army if requested.
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Experience and Skills
- Working knowledge of issues pertaining to homeless individuals and the homeless information system.
- Experience in non-profit and unionized environments is an asset.
- Ability to work with diverse populations in a respectful, non-judgmental manner and link clients with community resources.
- Strong interpersonal, leadership and coaching skills; ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong organization, planning and computer skills (Microsoft Office), with excellent oral and written communication.
- Self-motivated, disciplined, and able to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Ability to undergo required screening and background checks, including vulnerable sector checks, to the Salvation Army’s satisfaction.
- Ability and willingness to support the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications for position responsibilities.
Compensation
The target hiring range for this position is $15.80 to $19.48 per hour, with a maximum of $27.50 per hour. Placement within the range will reflect market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills and qualifications relevant to the role.
