Primary Care Nurse

0.7 EFT, Permanent Position
Department/Unit: Primary Care (NorWest at Bluebird site) and Walk‑in Connected Care
Anticipated Shift: Days, Evenings, Weekends
Responsible To: Director of Primary Care
Anticipated Start Date: January, 2026
Salary: As per MNU Collective Agreement (Nurse III)
Union: MNU‑WCHREO
Site: NorWest at Bluebird Clinic

Position Overview

The Primary Care Nurse will function within an interdisciplinary primary health care team, providing comprehensive nursing services to clients across the lifespan within the Inkster/Seven Oaks community and beyond. The Primary Care Nurse will deliver direct client care, health promotion, chronic disease management and preventative services, while supporting quality improvement and program development initiatives at NorWest Co‑op Community Health, primarily at NorWest at Bluebird site along with Walk in Connected Care.

Responsibilities
  • Provides evidence‑based triage, assessment, and care planning for clients with a range of primary health needs.
  • Performs nursing procedures such as immunizations, venipuncture, dressing changes, and other treatments in accordance with established guidelines and protocols.
  • Delivers chronic disease management and health education for individuals and groups, including clients living with diabetes, hypertension, asthma, and COPD.
  • Supports prenatal, well‑baby, and reproductive health programs, including Pap testing, STI counselling and testing, pregnancy choice counselling, and contraceptive management.
  • Collaborates with physicians, nurse practitioners, and interdisciplinary team members to ensure coordinated and continuous care.
  • Documents client encounters in the electronic medical record (EMR) accurately and in a timely manner, ensuring compliance with professional and organizational standards.
  • Participates in the planning, promotion, and delivery of community health clinics and outreach initiatives such as flu clinics, Pap clinics, and health fairs.
  • Mentors students and supports staff learning through participation in teaching and supervision.
  • Contributes to quality improvement and client safety initiatives, ensuring ethical and culturally sensitive care.
  • Applies harm reduction and trauma‑informed principles to practice, supporting equitable and client‑centered health care.
Experience
  • Minimum 2 years of recent primary care or community health nursing experience preferred.
  • Experience working with diverse populations across the lifespan.
  • Experience with EMR systems, particularly Accuro, considered an asset.
Education
  • Bachelor of Nursing Degree required.
  • Current active practicing registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM).
  • Authorized Prescriber RN designation or commitment to complete within 2 years of hire.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Certification/Licensure/Registration
  • Active practising registration with CRNM required.
  • Maintains professional competence through ongoing education and adherence to CRNM standards of practice.
  • Valid Manitoba driver’s licence and access to a vehicle required.
Qualifications And Skills
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Awareness of, and sensitivity to, issues of cultural diversity and colonialism.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide harm reduction, trauma‑informed and community development principles within practice.
  • Strong advocacy and service navigation skills, knowledge of community resources.
  • Ability to perform tasks independently, take initiative, as a member of the healthcare team.
  • Demonstrated effective conceptual, organisational, interpersonal, critical thinking/problem‑solving and decision‑making skills.
  • Proficient with using a computer, software programs, and applications such as Windows and Word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Experience using Accuro preferred.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Follows Regional/Facility/Unit policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines.
  • Follows the Personal Health Information Act (PHIA).
  • Applies principles of collaborative practice.
  • Understands roles and responsibilities of members of the healthcare team.
