Plumbing and Gas Inspector 1

Competition No: 2025-210

Duration: Regular Full Time

Salary: $7,319 – 7,629 – 7,946 – 8,285 – 8,647/month (2024 Rates)

Schedule: 70 hours bi-weekly; Monday to Friday from 7:30 AM – 4:15 PM (Nine-Day Fortnight)

This is regulatory and inspectional work of a technical nature involving the inspection of new and existing residential, commercial, and industrial plumbing, sewer and gas installations to ensure compliance to municipal standards, codes, by‑laws, and applicable Regulations and Acts. The work involves responsibility for approving or rejecting inspected work. Incumbents of positions in this class exercise considerable independent judgment in making technical decisions and in interpreting applicable regulations to those concerned. Work performance is reviewed by a supervisor for technical adequacy, consistency and conformance with established practices. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include completion of Grade 12 and completion of plumbing trade apprenticeship, plus sound experience as a journeyman plumber and gas fitter, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Thorough knowledge of plumbing, gas fitting, hydronic heating and sewer‑connection codes and standards and of the by‑laws related thereto. Thorough knowledge of the methods, practices, materials, tools and equipment used in the plumbing and gas trades. Ability to understand and interpret building plans and recognize requirements relating to plumbing, gas, sewer installations and drainage installations. The successful candidate establishes and maintains effective working relationships with owners, tradesmen, contractors and others and enforces rules and ordinances with tact and diplomacy; prepare reports, write objection notices; and maintain records related to work.

A BC Driver’s License, B.C. Certificate of Qualification in Plumbing & Class B Gas Fitter Certificate are required. Those at the more junior stages of their inspector careers are encouraged to apply. A willingness to learn and grow within the Building Department is essential. The Plumbing and Gas Inspector 1 requires a Certificate of Competency as a Gas Inspector (Safety Officer), Building Officials’ Association of British Columbia Plumbing Level 1 Qualification or to be enrolled in the Level 1 Plumbing Program and obtain these qualifications within 6 months of hire date; subsequent requirements include the Building Officials’ Association of British Columbia Plumbing Level 2 Qualification or to be enrolled in the Level 2 Plumbing Program and obtain qualification within 12 months of hire date. Backflow Assembly Tester Certification is preferred.
