About Alberta Operations

Dow Canada operates one of the nations largest petrochemical facilities in Fort Saskatchewan, home to four world-class production units. These units manufacture hydrocarbons, ethylene, polyethylene, and electricity, serving global markets with innovative solutions. About the Role

As a Plant Operations Technician, you will play a vital role in optimizing the performance of our production facilities, including Hydrocarbons, Solution Polyethylene, Gas Phase Polyethylene, and Power & Utilities. You will monitor and adjust process equipment, troubleshoot operations, and ensure adherence to Dows Life Critical Standards for safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible operations.

This position also includes learning advanced control systems, isolating and preparing equipment for maintenance, and contributing to decarbonization efforts under the P2Z program.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor and optimize plant operations, including equipment checks and control adjustments.
  • Perform field inspections and adhere to Dows operational safety protocols.
  • Participate in rigorous training programs (up to three years), with opportunities for travel to locations like Red Deer, Alberta, and New Orleans, Louisiana.
  • Work in team-driven environments and demonstrate leadership, initiative, and organizational skills.
  • Follow Operating Discipline principles to ensure consistent and reliable plant performance.
Specialized Areas

You may contribute to one of the following areas:

Hydrocarbons
  • Operations include fractional distillation, cracking furnaces, water treatment, and cavern storage.
  • Teams: 10+ operators.
Solution Polyethylene
  • Involves flammable hydrocarbon management, flash drums, and vacuum systems.
  • Teams: ~6 operators.
Gas Phase Polyethylene
  • Focus on catalyst and reaction processes in the gas phase with flammable hydrocarbons.
  • Teams: ~4 operators.
Power and Utilities
  • Operations include natural gas cogeneration units, steam generators, and water treatment systems.
  • Teams: ~5 operators.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Progress toward ABSA 4th Class (or higher) certification.
  • Valid Canadian drivers license.
  • Must be 18 years or older and legally authorized to work in Canada.
Preferred Skills
  • Technical diploma in Chemical Engineering or Power Engineering Technology.
  • One or more years of related experience in operations, instrumentation, or mechanical fields.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, varying heights, and high-stress environments.
  • Frequent lifting of materials up to 50 lbs.
  • Participation in emergency response training, including live fire and rope rescue drills.
  • Capability to wear personal protective equipment, including respirators and safety harnesses.
