Plant Manager

SUMMARY

The Plant Manager plays a crucial role in overseeing the treating plant’s operations. Reporting to the General Manager, this position includes coordinating daily plant activities and scheduling production to achieve corporate objectives and environmental standards. The primary goal is to produce high‑quality treated lumber products while ensuring a safe working environment for all employees.

This position requires a leader who will roll up their sleeves and lead by example. Approximately twenty‑five staff report to this position. The role requires a team builder who will spend about eighty percent of their time on the plant floor and twenty percent performing administrative responsibilities.

EXPECTED CONTRIBUTIONS
PLANT OPERATIONS
  • Direct and coordinate plant operations in alignment with company policies and procedures.
  • Oversee daily production activities, set production goals, and ensure compliance with quality control measures.
  • Lead troubleshooting efforts, providing technical expertise to identify problems and implement effective solutions; manage and prioritise projects in a cost‑effective manner.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations related to plant operations.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to coordinate inventories, production schedules, and shipping logistics.
  • Actively participate in weekly production meetings to discuss goals and performance.
  • Chair daily safety meetings to promote a culture of safety within the plant.
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment for all employees.
  • Ensure equipment is properly maintained to meet quality, productivity, and reliability standards.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement in safety, quality, and equipment reliability.
  • Adhere to all workplace safety rules and regulations.
STAFF MANAGEMENT
  • Oversee human resources functions, including health and safety, recruitment, terminations, performance management, attendance management, and training for approximately twenty‑five unionised plant employees and three administrative staff.
  • Cultivate a positive work environment that encourages teamwork and collaboration.
  • Coordinate job‑specific and safety training for employees to enhance skills and compliance.
  • Address employee concerns and issues fairly and consistently to maintain trust and morale.
  • Foster a well‑trained, motivated workforce through effective coaching and development initiatives.
Requirements
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Minimum of five years of supervisory experience in a manufacturing or production environment.
  • Experience in lumber manufacturing is considered an asset.
  • Proven ability to train and direct staff, motivating and developing team members while setting and monitoring performance standards.
  • Strong coaching and team‑building skills.
  • Excellent organisational abilities with a knack for managing competing priorities effectively.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with both internal and external parties.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and ERP systems.
Other Requirements
  • Must have steel‑toed boots.
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds (23 kilograms).
  • Able to perform physical aspects of duties such as bending, lifting, and reaching during the course of the shift.
  • Must be able to speak, read, and write English.
  • Demonstrated good written and oral communication skills.
EDUCATION
  • High school graduation is a minimum requirement.
  • Post‑secondary education in business is an asset.
Benefits

The typical hiring range for this position is £90,000 – £110,000 annually. The base pay offered is based on geographical location and may vary depending on the applicant’s job‑related knowledge, skills, experience, and internal equity. Similar positions located in other geographical locations may not necessarily receive the same salary range. The compensation information is an estimate and provided to meet applicable provincial pay‑transparency legislation.
