JOB SUMMARY
The personal care aide (PCA) assists the resident with all activities of daily living. Personal hygiene and basic nursing care is provided by the personal care aide. The PCA observes and reports any changes in the resident’s status to the RPN or charge nurse.
ACCOUNTABILITY
The PCA reports directly to the registered nurse in charge and/or the neighbourhood coordinator as appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES
- The vocational standards established by the Ministry of Training, Colleges & Universities; the National Association of Career Colleges standards; or the Ontario Community Support Association standards.
- Must be a minimum of 600 hours in duration, counting both class time and practical experience time.
- Have a Health Care Aide or PSW Certificate or their equivalent from another province/country.
- Must have an interest in the elderly and their problems.
- Have the ability to work as a co-operative Team Member.
- Agree with the basic philosophy and objectives of the Village, be caring, and show respect for our Residents and their families.
- Possess a working knowledge of the Nursing Home Act and Program Standards Manual requirements.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Job requires standing, walking, bending, lifting, and transferring residents.
- Floors may be slippery when wet.
- Regular use of sense required (sight, hearing, smell & tactile).
- May need to cope with aggressive residents, both verbally and physically.
- May be exposed to communicable diseases.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists with the personal hygiene of residents.
- Ensures residents are dressed appropriately.
- Cares for resident’s adaptive devices such as hearing aids, glasses, dentures.
- Cleans equipment such as beds, wheelchairs, walkers, commodes, urinals, etc.
- Toilets residents as per RCP with dignity and privacy.
- Gives skin care as per RCP. (Skin treatments under the direction of the RN, e.g., ointment / cream application).
- Assists residents to and from activities.
- Tidies the resident’s environment after giving personal care.
- Respects the resident’s belongings. Monitors resident’s clothing needs and reports to family.
- Does linen changes as per schedule.
- Weighs residents as per schedule.
- Records TPR on admission and prn.
- Reports observations to charge nurse.
- Reports all falls, bruises, and skin tears to RPN charge nurse. Does not move a resident who has fallen before the charge nurse or RPN assesses the resident.
- Charts on Daily Flow Sheets.
- Attends care conferences, team meetings and in‑services.
- Assists in maintaining a physical and social environment suitable and safe for resident care.
- Participates in joint OH&S programs.
- Promotes infection control and is aware of infection control policies and procedures, such as pre‑rinsing soiled linen before sending them to the laundry.
- Deals courteously with all team members, residents, residents’ families, visitors and volunteers.
- Knows the emergency procedures of the Village.
- Knows lifts and transfer procedures.
- Refers family questions to the charge nurse and maintains confidentiality regarding resident and Village information.
- Meets nutritional needs, such as feeding meals and serving nourishment.
- Participates in quality assurance and continuous quality improvement programs.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
RESPONSIBILITIES FOR HEALTH AND SAFETY
- Displays an attitude that is focused on working safely and ensuring that the work.
- Uses safe work practices.
- Reports any actual or potential hazard to the immediate supervisor.
- Uses or wears personal protective equipment (PPE) (or clothing) as required.
- Promptly reports personal injury to the supervisor and seeks first aid as needed.
- Participates in fire safety activities and knows the Village fire and disaster plan.
- Maintains a clean and orderly work area.
- Does not use or operate any equipment in a way that would endanger any team member, resident or visitor.
- Does not remove and make ineffective any protective device required by the manufacturer or supplier.
- Does not take part in any prank, contest, feat of strength, unnecessary running or rough play and boisterous conduct.
