Education: Degree in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine or optometry.
Work setting: Hospital (staff position). Urban area.
Tasks: Conduct microscopic and chemical analyses of laboratory samples and specimens. Study the nature, cause and development of diseases and the structural and functional changes caused by diseases. Supervise laboratory activities. Act as consultants to other physicians. Order laboratory tests, X-rays and other diagnostic procedures.
Supervision: 1 to 2 people.
Certificates, licences, memberships, and courses: Specialty residency training. Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Certification Examination. Licensure by provincial or territorial authorities. Specialization in laboratory medicine: Anatomical pathology.
Security and safety: Criminal record check.
Work conditions and physical capabilities: Fast-paced environment. Work under pressure. Tight deadlines. Physically demanding. Attention to detail. Hand-eye coordination. Combination of sitting, standing, walking. Standing for extended periods. Walking. Bending, crouching, kneeling. Ability to distinguish between colours. Manual dexterity. Repetitive tasks.
