Summary

Sturgeon County is hiring a temporary full-time (up to 39 weeks – approximately March 2 to November 27, 2026), Parks Maintenance Labourer II position. This role performs park and trail operation and maintenance activities within Sturgeon County.

This is a safety sensitive position as it operates various equipment on County worksites. The position works 7 am to 5:30 pm (10 hour days) Tuesday to Friday.

Key Responsibilities

Park and Trail Asset Operation and Maintenance (30%)

  • Performs daily operation and maintenance of sport fields, playgrounds, trails, picnic sites, washrooms and other assets and improvements within County parks and open spaces, which includes waste/refuse management, grooming, sweeping, cleaning, and janitorial servicing.
  • Safely operates various equipment to perform work including push and riding lawn mowers, skid steers, tractors, weed trimmers, utility terrain vehicles, pickup trucks, trailers, and power tools.

Turf Management (30%)

  • Performs mowing on Sturgeon County lands, including developed parks and along Sturgeon County’s trail network utilizing a variety of riding mowing systems.
  • Trims grass and weeds around obstacles within parks and open spaces.

Winter Accessibility, Snow, and Ice Control (20%)

  • Completes snow removal and ice management on trails and surrounding park and open space assets.
  • Completes skating trail and ice surface maintenance and construction.
  • Hauls equipment to various worksites across Sturgeon County.

Inspections and Risk Management (10%)

  • Performs inspections and addresses corrective actions as required such as removal of obstacles and hazards.
  • Participates in a rotational weekend schedule as required to address emergent risks and safety issues within Public Parks and Open Spaces.

Other Related Duties (10%)

  • Assists with preparations for and attendance at special events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Adheres to applicable responsibilities and accountabilities as outlined in the Sturgeon County Health and Safety Management System.
  • Adheres to all of Sturgeon County’s policies, bylaws, procedures and processes, as well as align work to the Sturgeon County values.
Requirements
  • Experience in lawn care and property maintenance.
  • Experience with trailer hookup, cargo securement and towing.
  • Experience driving a pickup on gravel roads.
  • Mechanical knowledge and aptitude to repair and maintain lawn maintenance equipment.
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license with an acceptable driver’s abstract.
  • Minimum Emergency First Aid certificate or the ability to obtain prior to start date.
  • Defensive Driving course certificate, or the ability to obtain prior to start date.
  • Ground Disturbance level ll certification or the ability to obtain.
  • National Safety Code Cargo Securement Knowledge Certification or the ability to obtain.
  • National Safety Code Orientation or the ability to obtain.
  • National Safety Code Pre-Trip & Cargo Securement Orientation & Evaluation or the ability to obtain.
  • National Safety Code Pre-Trip Knowledge or the ability to obtain.
  • Chainsaw knowledge and orientation or ability to obtain.
  • Utility terrain vehicle training or ability to obtain.WHMIS 2015 or ability to obtain.
  • Related Ability to work in a team environment or independently.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally and politely verbally with others.
  • Problem-solving skills to address day-to-day issues.
