Optical Manufacturing Technician

OFF SHIFTS: B-Shift (3:00pm-11:30pm), C-Shift (11:00pm-7:30am)

Minimum 35 hrs/week; overtime as needed

Job Summary and Essential Duties

The Optical Manufacturing Technician is responsible for manufacturing precision optics and components. Candidates will undergo training to operate equipment such as CNC machines, generating and polishing machines, and testing instruments, applying knowledge of layout, tooling, shop mathematics, and optical materials.

Training and Responsibilities
  • Read and interpret lens specifications from blueprints, drawings, and work orders
  • Set up and operate equipment including CNC and non-CNC generating, grinding, polishing, centering, and inspection machines
  • Mount work and tooling on fixtures using adhesives, friction, or vacuum
  • Mix and apply compounds for grinding and polishing
  • Grind and polish optics to specifications
  • Learn to operate interferometers, coordinate measuring machines, and advanced testing equipment
  • Inspect optics during manufacturing for conformance to specifications

Advancement is based on education, experience, skills, responsibility, and leadership potential.

Education Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED required; vocational training in manufacturing or related fields preferred
Minimum Requirements
  • Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office
  • Strong shop math skills: algebra, geometry, trigonometry, fractions, ratios, decimals, percentages
  • Ability to follow instructions and pay attention to detail
  • Ability to interpret mechanical and optical blueprints
  • Work effectively in a fast-paced environment with good time management
  • Good decision-making and mental dexterity
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Analytical troubleshooting skills
Additional Skills and Experience
  • Ability to analyze technical drawings
  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination
  • Data collection and interpretation skills
  • Multi-tasking ability
  • Initiative and concentration to learn new skills
  • One or more years of manufacturing experience preferred
Work Requirements

Physical Demands:

  • Stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, and hear frequently
  • Prolonged sitting or standing may be required
  • Visual abilities include close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment
  • Good hand-eye coordination and dexterity required
Work Environment
  • Manufacturing setting with variable noise levels
  • Potential exposure to oils and solvents
  • Generally clean environment with safety protocols
  • May involve exposure to moving mechanical parts and fumes
  • Assignment to various production areas as needed
