Overview

DHL Express has an opening for an Operations Manager at Richmond, BC. The Gateway Manager arranges the movement of freight by various transportation methods, including Air, Ocean, and Ground, on behalf of exporters and importers for DHL's import, export, trans-border and domestic product lines. The Manager serves as the single point of coordination between customers, customs brokers, and shipping carriers.

Responsibilities
  • The role has five Supervisors as direct reports and a team of 100 plus employees: responsible for hiring, coaching, training, and developing subordinate staff. HIC and Retail Supervisors are also reporting to the GTW Ops Manager.
  • Assigns work, sets completion dates, reviews work, and manages performance in accordance with organizational policies, procedures and performance management processes
  • Establish superior customer service performance indicators and meet/exceed standards for on-time clearance and achieve COA, DF and IB BOS Index targets and overall service quality.
  • Regular daily communication is key with the PUD and Loomis Team on flight arrival/departures and load etc.
  • Any delay on Inbound or Outbound flight should be communicated on time to the stakeholders
  • Inbound volumes should be monitored and sorted on time for early departure of the couriers
  • Responsibility for the cost optimization of the Gateway facility.
  • Resources and manpower planning is key for import and export operations
  • Manage employee/labour relations through appropriate application of Collective Agreement.
  • Manage all local Human Resources issues in alignment with Human Resources team.
  • Monitor & improve EBIT through profitable revenue growth, management of GTW costs, handling; and on-time data entry.
  • Assist in the development of the long & short-range YVR Gateway objectives and plans for attainment.
  • Expedites the daily activities of all operational functions ensuring client satisfaction is successfully achieved and company policies adhered to with the goal of maximizing profitability for the company
  • Responsible for development and implementation of special projects
  • Ensures quality system is implemented and maintained within area of responsibility
  • Assists in annual budget preparation for area of responsibility
  • Organize, assign responsibility and develop, through training & counseling, competent branch staff, providing opportunities for growth and promotion.
  • Provide leadership, through appropriate decision-making, communication and motivation, to get Gateway management and staff to effectively perform their duties and provide qualified people for advancement and working closely with compliance and brokerage team
  • Ensure staff compliance with established Company standards, policies and procedures, i.e., workplace conduct, Occupational Health & Safety, Transport of Dangerous Goods, and WCB.
  • Ensure all safety measures are in place dealing with people accident/incidents and reporting via iCare.
  • Ensure that all security measures are in place related to people, facility and shipments, i.e., access control, Xray screening, Transport Canada compliance, ETD and Physical inspections of the shipments
  • Exports compliance is key following the Transport Canada and DHL process and regulations, also focusing on load control and ramp management
  • Ensure that the inbound and outbound flights arrive and depart on time and delays are reported if any
  • Work closely with the PUD and Loomis locations to connect shipments on time.
  • Implement continuous improvement initiatives especially 5S in the warehouse to maintain proper housekeeping
Qualifications
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Proven experience and success in leadership positions.
  • Demonstrated general accounting, finance & administration experience
  • Viewed as expert in functional or business area within DHL
  • Develop relations with CBSA and other compliance stakeholders including CargoJet/Air Canada.
  • Good understanding of the Bond cage/CBSA process
  • Monitor and action any noncompliance with utmost importance like AMPSe etc
  • Monitor operations cost and optimize productivity and other costs
  • Typically requires BS/BA and 6-8 years’ experience in related field, including at least 2 years of supervisory experience
  • Professional certification required in some areas
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully manage multiple tasks/priorities.
  • Proven work experience in a union environment and negotiation skills.
  • 3-5 years management experience in a medium to large service company, preferably transportation, logistics and Airside operations
  • University degree (inappropriate discipline) or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing quality/ process improvement initiatives
  • Must have completed 12 months in the current role
