A leading automotive manufacturer in Canada is seeking an experienced OBD Specialist to enhance controls and diagnostics in low voltage power distribution. The Low Voltage Infrastructure (LVI) Organization within the Embedded Platform Systems & Infrastructure (EPSI) organization is focused on the development of systems and controls centered around on-vehicle low voltage power generation, energy storage, power management, distribution, and consumption control. Low Voltage Infrastructure (LVI) organization is looking for experienced and motivated candidates for an On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) Specialist position in the Low Voltage Quality, Prognostics & Diagnostics group. The selected candidate will be responsible for the development of requirements, software algorithm design and development, verification, certification documentation and monitoring field performance including emissions warranty for in-vehicle low voltage power distribution devices.
Support the growth of controls and diagnostic capability to keep General Motors at the forefront of technology in the electrification area by:
Provide leadership to multi-disciplinary engineering teams to understand functional requirements and implement appropriate controls and diagnostic solutions
Lead the development of controls and diagnostics software subsystem level requirements that ensure compliance with safety requirements and with government regulations including emissions regulations (CARB 1968.2 OBDII Regulations) and GM-internal policies and best practices
Create and maintain functional and non-functional requirements in the Sub-System Technical Specification (SSTS) and Behavioral Test Specifications (BTS), using Behavioral Driven Development (BDD) methodologies
Support the scrum team members in the decomposition and understanding of the solution or software subsystem requirements as needed
Adhere to all safety precautions and requirements, treating safety as the top priority during all work activities
Develop and submit controls & diagnostic requirements in support of sourcing activities for outsourced components
Interface with other GM internal teams on diagnostic interfaces – Electrical Architecture, Safety, Service, Validation, Vehicle Integration Teams, etc.
Collaborate in key architecture work groups to represent Low Voltage Power Distribution interests in architecture decisions to ensure regulatory compliant diagnostic impacts are understood and addressed.
Lead the development of controls-oriented models by selecting the appropriate method to control and/or diagnose a given feature while considering system characteristics and constraints with input from cross functional teams
Embrace BDD/TDD software development methodologies to ensure Software Built in Quality, promoting early bug detection, and facilitating collaboration between developers, testers, and non-technical stakeholders.
Optimize controls & diagnostic design through modeling, simulation, data collection, and analysis
Utilize CI/CD pipelines for efficient development, testing, and deployment of software solutions, with an understanding of DevOps principles.
Collaborate with other controls, software and diagnostic engineers to review software implementation, ensuring compliance with requirements
Familiarize and work efficiently with Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) and Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) principles, leveraging them to create optimized and modular software solutions.
Help Define vehicle program calibration strategies and DTC typing guidance for OBDII diagnostics coordinated with safety and service requirements.
Working with test architect to ensure subsystem level test requirements and the verification of the controls and diagnostic design
Lead the utilization of automated test tools in build environments, benches, and vehicles to verify functionality at the Function, Controller and System level
Support resolution of vehicle, plant, or customer issues related to controls, diagnostics, and calibration
Analyze test results and participate in data-driven system development and issue resolution initiatives
Coordinate the execution of the Diagnostic Operation Evaluation (DOE) testing of Low Voltage Power Distribution Solution for verification of compliance to OBD II Regulations.
Proactively identify warranty and performance improvement opportunities
Single point contact to the Program Teams for Low Voltage Power Distribution Diagnostics development, production and warranty issues.
Work in concert with GM’s Total Compliance Engineer to manage submission of Low Voltage Power Distribution diagnostic plans and certification documentation to meet regulatory requirements for all regions of sale
Model and foster desired core values and behaviors. Able to demonstrate technical leader competencies including Dealing with Ambiguity, Timely Decision Making, and Intellectual Horsepower
Perform other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification.
Occasional Travel as required.
Bachelors Degree in Engineering of Electrical, Computer or Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or equivalent
3+ years of automotive industry experience.
Skilled with Simulink, MATLAB, DOORs, GIT and Jira environment(s); plant modeling, analysis and change management tools
Strong understanding of controls and diagnostics as it relates to OBD II requirements
Demonstrated expertise in Diagnostics and Controls.
Experience in Embedded C, C++ programming languages and development
Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and achieve substantial influence without administrative authority

Knowledge of computer software pertaining to Software and Controls engineering (dSPACE, Vehicle Spy, RTC, CST Toolkit applications: 325Form and CertDoc)
Knowledge of Engineering Standard Work in controls and diagnostic calibration.
Knowledge of GVDP Program Timing and Calibration Milestone Deliverables
Ability to travel as required for offsite testing
MS in Engineering, Electrical, Mechanical, Computer or MS in Computer Science
Experience with Controls Algorithm and Software development, implementation, calibration and testing of real-time embedded controls systems
Demonstrated Experience in Low voltage controls & diagnostic requirements and algorithm development.
Experience with Change Management systems such as RTC and IBM Change Synergy
Experience in leading / supporting DFMEA/AFMEA reviews
Demonstrated Knowledge and experience developing diagnostics to meet CARB OBDII 1968.2 regulatory compliance
Familiar with Distributed OBD architecture
Experience with CAN, LIN protocol and use of serial communication tools (ex CANoe / Vspy)
Experience with dSPACE/Control Desk or similar HIL tools MIL, SIL, HIL Testing
Understanding of GM Vehicle Development Process
DFSS Black Belt certification, highly preferred
SAFe certification
The salary range for this role is $81,300 to $122,000. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
