Overview
The Registered Nurse in Obstetrics provides specialized care to patients throughout the childbirth continuum, including labor, delivery, postpartum, and perinatal care. This role involves working in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment to support mothers, newborns, and families during one of life’s most significant experiences.
Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to patients in labor, delivery, and postpartum stages.
- Monitor maternal and fetal vital signs, labor progression, and respond to complications.
- Administer medications, pain management interventions, and assist with epidurals and inductions.
- Support and coach patients through labor and delivery, offering emotional and physical care.
- Assist physicians and midwives during deliveries, including cesarean sections and emergency procedures.
- Provide immediate newborn care, including APGAR scoring and neonatal resuscitation if required.
- Educate patients and families on postpartum recovery, breastfeeding, and newborn care.
- Maintain accurate documentation and ensure compliance with clinical protocols.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including obstetricians, pediatricians, anesthesiologists, and social workers.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or equivalent.
- Current registration with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
- Minimum 1–2 years of experience in obstetrics, labor & delivery, or perinatal nursing preferred.
- Certification in Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
- Fetal Health Surveillance (FHS).
- Inpatient Obstetric Nursing (RNC-OB) – preferred.
- Strong clinical judgment, communication, and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to work effectively in high-pressure, emotionally charged situations.
- Specialty training: perinatal specialty, FHS, NRP.
- Orientation: 1 shift. Shifts: 0700-1900 & 1900-0700.
