Job description

Island Health’s Department of Midwifery has opportunities for Registered Midwives to provide full-scope culturally safe wrap-around midwifery services, as set out in the Health Professions Act and Midwives Regulation of BC to the following populations:

  • People who self-identify as Indigenous
  • Indigenous birth evacuees (people relocated to the South Island / Victoria General Hospital (VGH) to access perinatal services unavailable in their home communities); patients will usually be referred by the VGH Maternal Fetal Medicine or a referring provider from their home community
  • Youth (ages 15-24) in Greater Victoria area
  • Other members of the population who may benefit from culturally safe wrap-around midwifery care and are not currently receiving midwifery services, such as: persons with substance use or mental health concerns, persons experiencing poverty or who are homeless.

Ideal candidates will demonstrate a dedication to providing culturally safe, full-scope midwifery care within Island Health. Midwives will be expected to provide clinical services at a range of locations, this includes providing home birth. Midwives in British Columbia are independent practitioners with their own community practices.

Midwives at VGH provide care to 50% of the local perinatal population and the local Division of Midwifery is well integrated within the multi-disciplinary perinatal care team at VGH and regionally within Island Health medical staff structure. Midwives have been instrumental in shaping how perinatal care services are delivered in the region.

Successful applicants must be eligible for full licensure with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) and demonstrate appropriate experience and training.

Territorial Acknowledgement

Before Canada and British Columbia were formed, Indigenous Peoples lived in balance and interconnectedness with the land and water where the necessities of life are provided.

Health disparities persist today as a result of the ongoing impacts of colonization and Indigenous-specific racism. Healthy lands, healthy people.

Island Health acknowledges and recognizes these homelands and the stewardship of Indigenous Peoples of this land. We continue, with humility, to build and strengthen our relationships.
