Job Description

This position oversees and manages the daily operations of a laboratory focused on food testing. Key responsibilities include leading the laboratory team, scheduling work, training staff, and ensuring compliance with ISO requirements, applicable regulations, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The role requires ensuring high-quality, efficient laboratory operations, troubleshooting equipment, and maintaining proper documentation for test methods and quality control. The manager will also review test data, investigate non-conformances, implement corrective actions, and perform sample analysis. Additionally, the position includes staff performance evaluations, recruitment, and maintaining compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Leading laboratory operations, scheduling work, and training employees.
  • Documenting the training of all technical staff on test methods, SOPs, regulations, ISO requirements, and laboratory policies / procedures.
  • Ensuring adherence to the highest quality and efficiency standards in laboratory operations.
  • Managing resource coverage and overall team performance.
  • Fostering morale and teamwork across the department.
  • Demonstrating and promoting the company vision.
  • Maintaining regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Assisting in managing daily microbiology laboratory operations, including scheduling, supervision, instruction, and monitoring of analyses.
  • Performing timely and accurate analysis of samples, including preparation, analysis, data review and reduction, and providing data interpretation and opinions.
  • Investigating non-conformances, implementing corrective actions, and conducting follow-ups to ensure resolution.
  • Reviewing, validating, and ensuring timely reporting of technical data.
  • Exercising authority to execute work stoppage in the event of a quality issue requiring operational pause pending investigation.
  • Applying appropriate quality measures that meet or exceed regulatory and company standards.
  • Following Quality System documents relevant to responsibilities (e.g., Quality Manual, SOPs, Test Methods).
  • Troubleshooting laboratory equipment and instruments; performing minor repairs and coordinating major repairs as needed.
  • Ensuring assigned equipment is cleaned, calibrated / standardized, and adequately maintained for testing requirements.
  • Maintaining equipment documentation, including operating instructions, manuals, and logbooks.
  • Maintaining a neat and accurate record-keeping system and ensuring quality control and ISO compliance.
  • Assisting laboratory staff in ensuring compliance with ISO requirements.
  • Reviewing and evaluating test data for technical accuracy and compliance with SOPs and test methods.
  • Performing basic statistical evaluations to ensure data quality and accuracy.
  • Creating and reviewing technical reports.
  • Participating in recruitment, interviewing, and hiring for positions reporting to this role.
  • Conducting annual performance evaluations for direct reports.
  • Staying current on industry and technical trends as guided by the Business Unit Manager.
  • Maintaining a perpetual state of operational readiness.
  • Adhering to all company health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education: BSc or higher degree in Biology, Microbiology, or a related scientific field.

Experience: 5+ years of experience in microbiology testing within a commercial laboratory or closely related field; proven leadership experience managing or supervising laboratory operations.

Technical Skills: Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).

Travel and Relocation: Willingness to travel for training and work at sister laboratories during the first 6 months. Potential for temporary relocation to Toronto or the U.S. based on operational needs.

Working Conditions: Laboratory-based position requiring the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as lab coats, gloves, goggles, and face shields. Ability to lift and carry up to 30 lbs and perform tasks involving standing for extended periods and repetitive motions. Flexibility to work late evenings or extended hours as required by laboratory demands and project timelines.
