Join Our Team as aMedical Laboratory Assistant/Technician.
The role reports to the Manager, Laboratory Services.
What You'll Do:
- Process and prepare samples for manual and automated testing on laboratory analyzers in compliance with laboratory standards and procedures.
- Identify clients ensuring samples are accurately labeled before testing, adhering to legal and laboratory procedural requirements.
- Prepare quality control, calibration, and reagent materials in compliance with laboratory standards and procedures.
- Perform and review quality control results and escort failed quality control results to the MLT or Manager, Laboratory Services.
- Perform and review calibration results and escort failed calibration results to the MLT or Manager, Laboratory Services.
- Manage laboratory inventory and supplies, including receiving, inspecting, counting inventory and supplies to maintain optimal levels and prevent shortages.
- Perform maintenance on laboratory analyzers and troubleshoot analyzers and laboratory equipment.
- Identify incidents and non-conformities, participating in the development of effective corrective action plans, escalating issues as appropriate and driving continuous improvement.
- Prepare and package specimens for transportation.
- Monitor and record temperature of thermally controlled equipment.
- Monitor and record temperature and humidity monitoring of environmental conditions.
- File and retrieve laboratory records.
- Perform phlebotomy (venipuncture and capillary punctures) to collect blood samples from clients.
- Greet and request required information from clients, explain the sample collection process, and ensure clients have followed necessary test protocol prior to sample collection.
- Escort clients to and from waiting lounges located throughout the clinic.
- Document and maintain client and sample information within the LIS.
- Monitor the testing add-ons list and prepare send-out samples for external testing as required.
- Follow all health, safety, and infection control policies to maintain a safe environment for clients and staff.
- Participate in ongoing education and professional development to remain current with industry standards.
- Assist in the onboarding and training of new medical laboratory assistants/technicians and phlebotomists.
- Participate in the competency assessments.
What You'll Need:
- Graduate of certified Medical Laboratory Assistant/Technician program
- MLPAO or equivalent certification
- 2+ years experience working in a medical laboratory or relevant experience
- Proof of Personal Liability Insurance (PLI) with MLPAO or CSMLS
- CPR certification
- Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) certified an asset
- Knowledge of medical and laboratory terminology
- Prior experience as a medical laboratory assistant/technician in a laboratory setting
- Prior experience as a phlebotomist, preferably in a clinic setting
- Superior organization and time management skills
- Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy and quality in all tasks
- Problem solving skills, including the ability to identify and follow up on issues
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) to effectively interact with clients of all ages and backgrounds
- Ability to maintain the strictest standards of safety, client privacy and confidentiality
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment and adapt to varying client needs
- Advanced level in Microsoft 365, Teams and Outlook
This is a full-time position working 40 hours per week that is scheduled during business hours Monday-Friday with the occasional Saturday between the hours of 6:30 am-7:30 pm. Our downtown Toronto clinic is conveniently locatedat 150 York St., which is nearby St. Andrew station or a 10-minute walk from Union Station!
Position Pay Range
$41,830.00 - $57,516.25 CAD annually
Pay will be determined based on an analysis of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications within the role's compensation grade. Medcan's compensation ranges are determined by a combination of required qualifications and skills, market value, and internal equity. The above range pertains solely to the base compensation and is not inclusive of additional compensation details such as perks, benefits, and potential bonuses or incentives.
