Medical Laboratory Assistant

Reports To: Clinical Pathologist/Lab Supervisor
Overview
Supporting the Vision, Values, Purpose, and Commitment of the Endocrine Lab: Reporting to Dr. Rennie Chong-kit, the Medical Laboratory Assistant assumes responsibility for all samples collected, received, and analysed in accordance with established laboratory standard operating procedures. Equally important, as a member of a small, independent diagnostic centre, the MLA works collaboratively with all members of the team performing a wide variety of tasks.
Key Areas of Involvement
- Performs phlebotomy
- Trains new phlebotomists
- Maintains all phlebotomy manuals
- Maintains test specimen requirement manuals
- Processes all laboratory tests requisitions and specimens.
- Manages, maintains, and controls equipment in relation to phlebotomy and daily laboratory duties.
- Ensures proper technique is applied in compliance with laboratory procedures involving patient care.
- Monitors and maintains the integrity of patient specimen collection processes.
- Assists with supply and equipment inventory and ordering.
- Reports any significant problems to the Lab Supervisor.
Qualifications
Education, Training & Experience
- Successful completion of a Medical Laboratory Assistant certificate.
- Minimum of one year’s recent related experience in the relevant laboratory discipline(s).
- Previous experience with phlebotomy.
Skills & Abilities
- Excellent communication skills.
- Up to date knowledge of relevant laboratory testing, techniques, methods, and procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize issues and workload, and complete assigned work.
- Ability to operate related equipment, including computerized information systems.
- Acute awareness of confidentiality and the need to keep all patients and personnel-based discussions to areas away from patients.
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
Job Types: Full-time, Fixed term contract
Contract length: 6 months
Pay: $26.00 per hour
Expected hours: 37.5 per week
