Overview
Marmot Basin, 1 Marmot Rd, Jasper, AB. Position: Snow School Instructor (L1/L2) - Seasonal, including part-time and full-time opportunities. Location: Marmot Basin, Jasper, AB. Reports to: Snow School Assistant Director and Director of Skiing. Season: November through May.
Responsibilities
- Teach ski or snowboard lessons to students of all ages and abilities within the scope of current certification.
- Provide guided services for Mountain Tours or FAM tours, safety orientations for school and youth groups, and assist with other duties as assigned by Snow School Supervisors.
- Ensure safety and Alpine Responsibility Code compliance; tailor lessons by age, ability and lesson type (private, group, youth) to meet client expectations in a safe and enjoyable manner.
L1 Instructor – Level 1
- Teach all age groups from 3 years to adults; progress students from never skied/snowboarding to safe control on blue terrain; guide simple tree trails and teach safe use of lift systems; educate students on the Alpine Responsibility Code; tailor lessons to age, ability, and lesson type to meet client expectations in a safe and fun manner.
L2 Instructor – Level 2
- Build on L1 responsibilities; progress students from blue to black groomed terrain; introduce off-piste techniques for small bumps, powder, and variable snow; assume leadership in group organization and large-group management in meeting areas.
These roles are full-time and part-time seasonal, running from November through May. Expect a fast-paced environment with a flexible daily schedule. Alberta Employment Standards regarding probationary periods apply.
Additional Duties and Job Share
To accommodate fluctuations in lesson bookings, Marmot Basin offers additional hours in roles such as Meet & Greet, Transportation, Special Events, Marketing, and Sanitization. A Job Share option exists for Level 1 and Level 2 instructors across Lift Operations, Rentals, Nursery, and Food & Beverage, with shifts split between the Snow School and the secondary department. The weekly balance depends on business levels.
Day-to-Day Life
Upon arrival, instructors check in, prepare equipment, join line-ups for lesson assignments, and teach lessons ranging from 1 hour to full day. Paid lunch breaks apply when timing requires staying with clients. Off-lesson time may be used for ski/snowboard improvement sessions.
Lesson Types
- Mite Private — Ages 3-6; private lesson with up to 2 children from the same family/group; 1-2 hours
- Tiny Tracks — Ages 3-6; group lesson for up to 2 students; meets in nursery
- Kids Camps — Ages 6-12; half-day and full-day options
- Discover and Next Step Ski/Snowboard Packages — For ages 13+
- Private Lessons — 1h, 2h, 3h, 5h; up to 5 people; tailored to client
- Domestic School/Youth Groups — 2 hours for new skiers; safety orientation and lift safety
- Full Day School/Youth Groups — Multi-day international groups; team-based progression
General Responsibilities
- Advocate safety; punctuality; professionalism; maintain uniform and equipment; be approachable and friendly; acquire mountain knowledge; understand equipment; relay customer comments to supervisors; assist in emergencies; comply with Alberta OH&S legislation; assist other departments as needed; adhere to corporate policies.
Qualifications
- Minimum CSIA or CASI Level 1 certification or international equivalent; physically fit to assist clients; ability to work with students all day; willingness to take on additional duties; prior Snow School experience valued; additional teaching qualifications are assets (e.g., dual certifications, Park, CADs, ACA).
- Criminal Record Check; Vulnerable Sector Check.
