Job Description Summary

UBC Financial Reporting is responsible for the integrity and transparency of the Universitys financial information ensuring compliance with accounting standards regulatory requirements and internal controls. The team leads the preparation and consolidation of UBCs audited financial statements and statutory reports to senior leadership government bodies and external stakeholders. Financial Reporting supports strategic decision-making through accurate financial data analysis and insights and plays a central role in institutional accountability risk management and long-term financial sustainability. The department also leads the coordination of the annual financial audit and serves as a key steward of the Universities fiscal reputation.

The Manager Financial Reporting plays a key role in leading the development and delivery of financial reporting and analysis across the University. This role involves reviewing complex financial data creating executive-level reports and presentations and working with teams to improve financial systems and processes for better accuracy efficiency and compliance. The Manager collaborates with departments like FP&A Treasury and Internal Controls to support informed decision-making and long-term planning while also offering guidance and support to internal teams on financial reporting practices.

The Finance Manager partners with their finance peers across the university to develop and implement new policies and continuously improves procedures to enable effective financial management reporting and business processes throughout the this role supports the Finance Director Financial Reporting in implementing strategic initiatives as well as providing effective accurate information for effective decision making.

Responsibilities
  1. Financial Reporting
    1. Leads in-depth analysis of complex financial reporting and planning challenges affecting the University working closely with the FP&A department and other key stakeholders to develop actionable recommendations. Prepares comprehensive executive summaries of findings and strategic advice to support informed data-driven decision-making
    2. Reviews and enhances financial systems business processes and data flows collaborating with cross-functional teams to optimize the administration of financial accounting. Develops and delivers targeted training programs to ensure consistent application of best practices driving efficiency accuracy and compliance across the Universitys financial operations.
    3. Responsible for the preparation of quarterly annual and ad hoc executive-level financial presentations briefing materials and analytical reports for senior leadership and the Board of Governors by translating complex financial data into clear strategic insights that support high-stakes decision-making and institutional oversight.
    4. Directs the integration and optimization of business intelligence tools to enhance data accuracy and accessibility develops sustainable documentation for both existing and emerging systems and partners with the Comptrollers office and key stakeholders across the University to recommend and implement continuous process improvements that elevate financial reporting and decision-making.
    5. Collaborates closely with Treasury Managers to leverage advanced forecasting models driving the development of robust long-term financial performance metrics comprehensive scenario planning and detailed variance analysis; integrates these insights seamlessly into the reporting cycle to enhance strategic financial decision-making and institutional planning.
    6. Cultivates a collaborative and solutions-oriented work environment by advising on practices that proactively resolve financial reporting challenges across the University that supports frontline decision-making and aligning departmental practices with broader institutional values.
    7. Works closely with the Manager Internal Controls to lead ongoing reviews of UBC policies and procedures related to financial reporting assessing the effectiveness of internal controls recommending improvements and leading implementation by partnering with the units to strengthen compliance and operational efficiency.
    8. Identifies key financial risks and opportunities through data-driven analysis advising the Director Financial Reporting on potential implications and proposing solutions to improve financial outcomes.
    9. Researches emerging financial issues and trends collaborates with stakeholders across the University to assess their potential impact and provides strategic recommendations to inform institutional decision-making.
  2. Management
    1. Leads and supports a high-performing team members through coaching professional development planning and performance management aligned with the strategic priorities of the Comptrollers Office and the VPFO
    2. Plans organizes and directs work to meet monthly quarterly yearly and ad hoc with the Director Financial Reporting determines appropriate staffing levels and requirements
    3. Inspiring the team with an inclusive mindset by continuously leading with the UBC values and ensuring all voices are heard as changes are made to people process and systems.
  3. Other
    1. Performs other related duties as required to deliver on Financial Reportings mandate as a strategic partner in UBCs financial planning and institutional performance.
    2. Effectively collaborate with key stakeholders within the University to build relationships and be informed of the latest business plans in their respective areas to support the big picture and alignment between Financial Reporting and Financial Planning and Analysis.
    3. Provides strategic input and leadership in the development and implementation of financial reporting training and standards supporting operational excellence and consistent practices across the University.
  4. Consequence of Error / Judgement

    Incorrect application of GAAP and Accounting errors could cause serious inaccuracies in the University s records resulting in errors in the financial statements. Financial statement errors could lead to incorrect decisions by the Executive and the Board and could damage the reputation of the adverse publicity could negatively impact the University s ability to attract funding and faculty / staff. Incorrect recommendations could result in poor internal controls inefficient workflow as well as underutilization of human resources.

    Due to the senior level of this position in the portfolio the decisions or recommendations made will have a significant effect on the universitys financial standards and operations. A high degree of judgment technical expertise and strategic thinking is required.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

University degree in a relevant discipline Commerce preferred with completion of a recognized professional accounting designation (CA CGA CMA) that is current and accreditation maintained.

A minimum of eight (8) years of experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Willingness to respect diverse perspectives including perspectives in conflict with ones own.

Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing ones own awareness knowledge and skills related to equity diversity and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications

Business acumen understanding the strategic story and demonstrated ability to implement operational actions in a complex environment

Advance knowledge of computer software applications (primarily Excel and Microsoft products platform) including complex spreadsheet data warehousing and business intelligence tools.

Experience working within Public Sector Accounting Standards and Public practice audit experience is an asset.

Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills along with the ability to exercise sound and rational judgment.

Strong communication and inter-personal skills especially when explaining complex concepts and processes to a diverse group of individuals including non-finance staff members.

Demonstrated ability to engage with senior levels of management and financial / non-financial personnel in an organization.

Strong attention to detail and the demonstrated ability to multi-task work well under pressure and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines especially during quarter-end all while maintaining a high degree of accuracy and working with complex information.
