Job Title: Maintenance Contractor/Handyperson
No of positions: One(1)
Job type: 3 months’ probation. Can lead to part-time / full-time permanent
Start date: as soon as possible
Reports to: Property Manager
Job Summary
A Maintenance Contractor/Handyperson will work to maintain Glenn Haddrell Housing Cooperative (GHHC) to desired standards and to ensure the safety and security of the units.
A Maintenance Contractor/Handyperson will work toward the promotion of the coop’s reputation amongst the members and good customer relations by the appropriate and timely response to requests for work and supervision of outside contractors.
A Maintenance Contractor/Handyperson is responsible for inventory of tools and products. A Maintenance Contractor/Handyperson will support GHHC’s office administrator and the Board of Directors in its role as Housing provider.
Responsibilities
- To maintain and repair units
- Follow cleaning routines and schedules
- Receive work orders, complete tasks, and record work
- Independently identify required work and problems, and initiate repairs and provide solutions
- Monitor mechanical and utility rooms
- Extra duties as identified in accessible units
- Changing lightbulbs/fixtures as required. Only in accessible units
- To ensure the safety and security of the coop’s units
- Adhere to routines regarding the safety and security of units sites
- Complete and constantly update all checklists and logs
- Identify, report and resolve all unsafe conditions and activities
- Promote positive member relations
- Communicate with administrator and members about the timing of required work
- Remain current with housing standards
- Stay familiar with Coop’s administrator priorities for work
- Bring an understanding of the state of buildings and grounds to administrator, board meetings and members meetings
- Record and action all needed activity (work orders)
- Liaison with outside contractors
- Record contractor activity
Qualifications
- Experience in all trades
- High School Diploma
- Excellent Fluency in English
- WSIB
Language Requirement
English language proficiency. Bilingualism in French and English will be a strong asset.
Pre-Hiring Requirements
- Criminal reference check (Vulnerable Sector Screening)
- Valid driver’s license and use of own vehicle
Knowledge
- Demonstrates knowledge of health and safety regulations and practices
- Demonstrates knowledge of mechanical systems and equipment associated with GHHC
Skills
- Able to undertake heavy manual labour and work in extremes of temperature
- Demonstrates skill in all trades, cleaning, building codes and the construction process. (Carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, cement work, flooring, ceramic, framing, cleaning, landscape and groundscare)
- Able to create work plans, adhere to routines, manage time and work to deadlines
- Able to record and accurately report work
- Able to communicate about repair and renovation practices
- Able to respond to crisis
- Displays values and attitudes in keeping with GHHC (respect, sensitivity, caring and support toward a diverse population) and, in particular, a belief coop principles

Salary and Benefits
The salary range for the position is dependent on an individual’s relevant experience.
