What You Will Be Working On
  • Review, draft, and negotiate legal agreements and other documents related to a variety of construction matters to protect the organization’s legal and business interests.
  • Help ensure Bird’s current and proposed activities, policies, business practices, and transactions comply with all relevant laws and regulations.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to proactively track, monitor, and resolve legal issues and disputes that may arise from existing commercial relationships.
  • Provide legal advice specifically in the areas of risk management.
  • Understand business objectives and provide practical recommendations to address legal risk.
  • Create and deliver regular training programs to colleagues, internal stakeholders, and business units.
  • Liaise with operations and outside counsel regarding project management and strategy.
  • Be a resource on legislative updates, case law and trends relating to construction.
  • Lead and mentor junior lawyers and legal staff, contributing to their professional development and the overall strength of the legal team.
  • Internal reporting to the Bird Executive and operational stakeholders regarding ongoing projects and procurements.
  • Travel outside the province may be required.
What We Are Looking For
  • JD/LLB and admitted to the Law Society of Ontario or another provincial bar in Canada
  • 5-8 years of commercial experience in the construction & engineering sector, with a preference given to experience gained in-house
  • Familiarity with construction contracts (various compensation models), joint venture agreements, design agreements, subcontracts and related agreements
  • Highly skilled at drafting, negotiating, and communicating information clearly and appropriately to different levels of the organization
  • Able to adapt to a fast-paced work environment using sound judgment and expertise
  • Excellent organization and time management skills
  • Able to collaborate and build strong relationships across working groups
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Curious, eager to learn and develop new skills
  • Self-starter who takes initiative to complete activities and is always looking for ways to improve
