A leading arts organization in Edmonton seeks a Financial Controller to manage financial operations, oversee budgeting, and ensure compliance with charitable requirements. The ideal candidate has over five years of accounting experience, strong bookkeeping skills, and is passionate about supporting the arts community. This permanent, full-time job offers competitive compensation and benefits, working Monday to Friday with increased responsibilities during festival seasons.
Position type: Permanent, full time Compensation: $68,000 – 72,000 + commensurate benefits Anticipated start date: as soon as possible Reports to: Executive Director and Artistic Director
The Financial Controller is responsible for executing and tracking financial controls, policies, and procedures, as well as overseeing the daily financial operations, book‑keeping, and administration for Fringe Theatre’s year‑round operations. The Financial Controller leads the process in building annual budgets with the support of various department leads; strategizes growth opportunities in collaboration with the leadership team; and manages the financial health of the organization. This position works cross‑functionally with all departments, as well as vendors, granters, sponsors, donors, Board and Committee members, and other relationships important to the health and vitality of Fringe Theatre’s operations.
You are a highly organized, detail‑oriented, and process driven dynamo who brings experience and passion to this vital role. You are a strategic thinker who understands the financial administration and statutory requirements of a busy charitable arts organization. You are deadline driven and value timely, collaborative conversations that lead to proactive decision making. You have sharp bookkeeping skills and are committed to maintaining efficient processes. Though numbers are your passion, you love people just as much. You communicate clearly and confidently and deeply value collaboration with your colleagues. You enjoy being part of a big, creative team and want to support the arts community with an open and positive energy. A passion for Fringe, live theatre, and the local arts scene helps, too!
This is a full-time, permanent position that generally follows a Monday‑Friday schedule. Please note: the workload of this position scales with the cycles of the Festival season, with increased focus and responsibility required from May to September to support the planning, delivery, and financial wrap‑up of the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival.
Please email your cover letter and resume to work@fringetheatre.ca with "Financial Controller" in the subject line. Applications will be accepted until May 2, 2025 or until a suitable candidate is hired.
At Fringe Theatre, we foster artists. We nurture audiences. We take chances. Fringe Theatre cultivates safer spaces for brave ideas and big artistic risk.
Since its very beginning, Fringe Theatre has been the meeting place where experience, perspective, diversity, and passion are explored, uplifted, and celebrated. Representation onstage, backstage, in the Front of House and Box Office, in our administrative spaces, and in our mentorship and training programs matters. The future of theatre in Treaty 6 is equitable, diverse, inclusive, and accessible. We believe representation within our organization will lead to greater equity, diversity, inclusivity, and accessibility in our community.
We are a collaborative, playful, creative, flexible, hard‑working team where big ideas and out-of-the-box approaches are encouraged. We know you have a big, beautiful, busy life outside of Fringe and we will do everything in our power to honour your humanness beyond the amazing work you do with us.
Our base of operations is the Fringe Theatre Arts Barns in Edmonton, AB (10330 84 Avenue). Our hours of business are typically 9am – 5pm Monday – Friday, though as a busy cultural space supporting more than 500 events year‑round and as the producers of the largest, longest running Fringe Theatre Festival in North America, there is an expectation that staff are reasonably available evenings and weekends based on season and Festival event activity.
Employees are expected to uphold and champion Fringe’s Safer Spaces and Anti-Racism programs and abide by our Code of Conduct.
