Job description
The Opportunity
  • We are looking for an intermediate level vegetation ecologist to join our team of passionate ecology professionals on a diversity of projects across multiple market sectors.
Responsibilities
  • Plan and conduct vegetation and wetland surveys, including Grassland Vegetation Inventory, plant community mapping, wetland assessment (identification, classification, delineation, and ABWRET-A).
  • Support Trace’s other practice areas as needed, cross‑training when necessary, with the reclamation and remediation practice areas.
  • Contribute to quality assurance and quality control within the ecology practice area.
  • Advise clients on municipal and provincial regulatory requirements, including the Alberta Wetland Policy.
  • Prepare biophysical impact assessments, Wetland Assessment and Impact Reports, Wetland Assessment and Impact Forms, and Environmental Protection Plans.
  • Facilitate regulatory approvals, including meeting with regulators.
  • Support project managers by carrying out project management tasks.
About You and Your Qualifications
  • 3+ years relevant experience.
  • At minimum, designation as a Professional Biologist-in-Training or a Professional Agrologist-in-Training in Alberta.
  • Strong plant identification skills and experience conducting vegetation and wetland surveys in Alberta.
  • Experience conducting rare plant surveys or a strong interest in doing so.
  • Understanding of provincial and federal legislation and policy (Water Act, Alberta Wetland Policy, Crown claimability, Migratory Birds Convention Act).
  • Strong technical report writing and data management skills.
  • Able to think critically, problem solve, and prioritize time and effort effectively.
  • Experience using MS Office suite and ArcGIS.
