About the Role:

Reporting to the Director, Hadiya’dagenhahs First Nations, Metis and Inuit Student Centre, the Indigenous Health & Wellness Navigation Coordinator is responsible providing support, resources, and guidance for Indigenous students regarding health and wellness. The Coordinator manages health and wellness programs tailored to the specific needs of Indigenous communities. This role works closely with various university departments, external partners, and Indigenous communities to ensure that programs are culturally appropriate and effective. The Indigenous Health & Wellness Navigation Coordinator is responsible for navigating students through available resources, fostering collaboration, and promoting Indigenous knowledge and practices in health and wellness.

Please note that this role will be required to work at the St. Catharines and Burlington campuses.

The Indigenous Health & Wellness Navigation Coordinator will:

  • Support students through the provision of individual wellness conversations;
  • Deliver culturally sensitive, trauma-informed care practices while advocating for Indigenous students' success, wellness, and safety;
  • Facilitate traditional healing practices and cultural teachings in collaboration with community knowledge keepers and Elders;
  • Ensure culturally safe and appropriate referrals tomental health professionals;
  • Maintain the medicine bundle/smudging materials for Hadiya'dagénhahs First Nations, Métis and Inuit Student Centre;
  • Identify students who are at risk of harm to self and/or others and connect with appropriate resources;
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate health and wellness programs specifically designed for Indigenous students;
  • Design and implement evidence based, high-quality and accessible workshops and events based upon student feedback that focus on campus, individual and community wellbeing;
  • Develop relationships with local Indigenous communities and resources to expand support networks for students;
  • Foster partnerships with external health organizations and service providers to enhance the range of services available to Indigenous students;
  • Prepare reports and provide insights to inform future program development and resource allocation.

Key Skills and Experience:

  • Undergraduate Degree in a relevant discipline, Health Sciences, Social Work, Indigenous Studies;
  • Lived experience working with Indigenous communities and strong ties to First Nations, Métis, and/or Inuit communities, with an understanding of Indigenous worldviews, cultures, and values;
  • Identify as First Nations, Métis or Inuit;
  • Lived experience navigating a post-secondary environment;
  • First Nations Mental Health First Aid Certification;
  • Case Management Training;
  • In-depth knowledge of colonization, Indigenous and Canadian histories, intergenerational trauma, and current issues facing Indigenous peoples;
  • Promotes and embodies inclusivity and respect within the workplace and the broader community;
  • Proven experience relationship-building within Indigenous communities;
  • Strong understanding of Indigenous cultural practices, healing practices, and ceremonies;
  • Knowledge of mainstream health services and community resources, specifically for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis programs and services in the Niagara Region;
  • Experience developing presentations, educational sessions, and events.

Preferred or Asset Skills:

  • Proficiency in Indigenous languages;
  • Knowledge of Indigenous cultural practices;
  • ASIST Certification;
  • Mental Health First Aid Certification;
  • CPR Certification.

Salary and Total Rewards:

  • Job Grade J, Salary Scale ($56,503 - $91,627);
  • Target Hiring Range: $56,503 - $60,000*
  • This is a permanent position that includes:
  • Health & Dental Benefits: Comprehensive extended health, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Pension Plan: Enrollment eligibility in the Brock University Pension Plan.
  • Vacation: Up to 3 weeks per year, in addition to university holidays.
  • Professional Development: Eligibility for the Brock Tuition Waiver Program.

*The final salary is based on experience, internal equity, and budget considerations within the target hiring range.
