The Office of the County Engineer provides a variety of important services to the traveling public. These are largely funded by the purchase of license plates and by gasoline taxes. There are 423 bridges and over 500 miles of public right of way - all the responsibility of the County Engineer. These responsibilities include design, construction, inspection, maintenance, and study which result in safety improvements or regulations in compliance with State law.

Under general supervision, the Highway Maintenance Worker performs general highway maintenance duties, repairs and installs guardrails, cuts shrubs and trees, mows grass, removes refuse and trash, assists in snow and ice removal activities, operates center-line machine and various other equipment, fabricates, installs, maintains and repairs road signs, operates tractor mower, performs routine maintenance and repair on trucks.
Completion of secondary education or equivalent (high school diploma or GED) and one (1) year work experience in road construction, erecting, installing and repairing roadway markings and signs and/or in the painting of traffic control lines and pavement traffic messages, maintenance or repair or vehicle and/or equipment maintenance and repair; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Must possess a valid state of residency driver’s license. Must remain insurable under the County’s vehicle insurance policy. Must have or be able to obtain within the first ninety (90) calendar days of appointment, a valid Class A - Commercial Driver's License issued by the state of residency.
Cell phones and/or two-way radios; computer, copier, fax, telephone, scanner, and other standard modern/business office equipment; motor vehicles, front and rear loading trucks, side-loading trucks, tractor-trailer trucks, dump trucks, asphalt paver, street sweeper, Jet/Vac truck, generators, air compressors, shoring equipment, concrete mixer, snow plow, fork lift, and other light and heavy motorized vehicles and equipment; measuring wheels for distance, paint mixers, paint guns, power drills, grinders and sanders, jack hammer; gas welding or brazing or cutting apparatus, Tungsten inert gas welding machine or other welding torches; weed eater, mower, pumps, paint sprayer, chain saw, circular saw, shovels, rakes, pliers, wrenches, hammers, screwdrivers, chisels and other miscellaneous power and hand tools.
Employee ascends and/or descends ladders, stairs, or scaffolds; works in an area in which the means of egress is or can be obstructed; has exposure to chemical compounds found in an office environment (e.g., toner, correction fluid, etc.); is exposed to environmental conditions which may result in injury from fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and/or poorly ventilated work areas; is exposed to possible injury from hazardous gases, chemicals, flammables, air contaminants, hazardous waste, unclean or unsanitary conditions, electrical shock; exposed to possibly injury as a result of working with moving mechanical parts of equipment or machines; works in or around crowds; has contact with potentially violent or emotionally distraught persons or vicious animals or life threatening situations; has exposure to fire, hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy weather conditions; exposure to hazardous driving conditions; works second or third shift; exerts 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently; occasionally lifts objects 50 pounds or less; occasionally carries objects 50 pounds or less; occasionally pushes objects 50 pounds or less; occasionally pulls objects 50 pounds or less. Note: In accordance with the U.S. Department of Labor physical demands strength ratings, this is considered medium work. In cases of emergency, unpredictable situations, and/or department needs, may be required to lift, push, pull, and/or carry objects heavier than D.O.L. strength ratings recommend.
