Job description
Heavy Duty Equipment Technician / Apprentice

Full‑time permanent Heavy Duty Equipment Technician or full‑time temporary Apprenticeship position in the Fleet Services Division, Department of Public Works.

Opportunity

Accountabilities
  • Perform all mechanical duties required to repair heavy trucks/light duty trucks and equipment power systems, including engines, transmissions, final drives, steering, brakes, and rears.
  • Diagnose hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic systems with diagnostic equipment and schematics.
  • Participate in all applicable training programs and related work activities.
Qualifications
  • Graduation from High School.
  • Interprovincial Journeyperson Certificate in the field of Heavy Duty Equipment Technician or Truck and Transport Mechanic, in good standing and registered with the Department of Advanced Education & Skills, Province of Newfoundland.
  • Registered Apprentice in the above trades (fourth‑year preferred).
  • Foreign diploma or certificate equal to the applicable Canadian credential, supported by an educational credential assessment (ECA) report less than 5 years old.
  • Language testing approved by the Atlantic Immigration Program, less than 2 years old.
  • Valid work permit or other authorization to legally work in Canada.
  • At least five (5) years of experience in repairing automobiles and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to work safely around equipment and identify safety hazards.
  • Independent work style and clear verbal and written communication skills.
  • Own tools and toolbox suitable for a Journeyperson or Apprentice.
  • Physical fitness to perform the duties.
  • Valid Driver’s Licence.
Compensation & Benefits

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, shift work as required.

Hourly Rate: $41.36/hr (base rate and market adjustment).

Apprentice Compensation Rates:

  • 4th year apprentice – 90% of Journeyperson rate
  • 3rd year apprentice – 85% of Journeyperson rate
  • 2nd year apprentice – 80% of Journeyperson rate
  • 1st year apprentice – 75% of Journeyperson rate

Union Membership: Must be or be prepared to join the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 569.
