Overview
Our leading non profit healthcare client is looking for a Data Architect. The successful candidate will lead strategic initiatives in health data architecture with a focus on healthcare data modeling and interoperability, particularly using HL7 FHIR standards. In this role, you will guide the development of data models for interoperable healthcare datasets and lead the CA Core+ national FHIR profiling strategy. You will work at the intersection of clinical data, enterprise integration, and digital health, collaborating across jurisdictions.
Responsibilities
- Lead the development of data models and entity relationships for pan-Canadian health data elements.
- Align FHIR profiles (CA Core+) with logical data models (e.g., pCHDCF / CACDI).
- Facilitate and coordinate cross-functional architecture workgroups involving clinical, business, and technical stakeholders.
- Promote best practices in data governance, quality, and security across system designs.
- Define architectural standards for FHIR resource structures, extensions, slicing, and value sets to ensure semantic integrity and reuse.
- Make data-driven architectural decisions balancing clinical, jurisdictional, and technical priorities.
- Act as the liaison between business needs and implementation teams (FHIR experts, data architects, developers, etc.).
- Manage the scope, timelines, and delivery of key initiatives such as CA Core+ and data mapping projects.
- Provide leadership to overcome technical challenges and unblock delivery by optimizing designs, tools, or processes.
- Collaborate with external partners (CIHI, vendors, ministries) to align modeling and data exchange strategies.
- Ensure all work adheres to privacy, consent, and enterprise security frameworks.
Experience & Skills
- 5+ years as a data or enterprise architect with a focus on data modeling.
- 5+ years in healthcare IT (e.g., EMRs / EHRs, health information exchange, or public health systems).
- 3+ years of experience working with FHIR standards, including profiling, slicing, and resource modeling.
- Familiarity with enterprise architecture frameworks (TOGAF, Zachman) is an asset.
- Experience with cloud-based data architecture is a plus.
- Strong grasp of healthcare data entities (Patient, Encounter, Observation, etc.).
- Knowledge of Canadian health data standards (e.g., pCHDCF, CA Core+, SNOMED CT, LOINC).
- Experience in healthcare data governance, metadata management, and quality control.
- Understanding of privacy and identity standards (OAuth2, OIDC, SAML).
- Track record of mentoring technical teams and fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration.
- Proficient with FHIR modeling tools (Forge, IG Publisher, Simplifier.net).
- Experience with modeling tools (e.g., UML, EA tools).
- Familiarity with data architecture concepts like logical / physical modeling and metadata strategies.
- Understanding of RESTful APIs, identity and access management, and cloud-native design patterns.
- Skilled in documentation and diagramming tools (Visio, Lucidchart, draw.io, MIRO).
Certifications
- TOGAF, AWS / GCP / Azure Architect certifications.
- HL7 FHIR Certification or equivalent hands-on experience developing FHIR specifications.
